The school did require signed permission slips for students to be allowed to watch. 58 out of 60 got it signed. The mom for one of the two took it upon herself to ruin it for everyone else after watching 50 minutes of the movie. The school did everything right. It's just crazy town stuff by the one mom to report the school.

Yes but I can’t blame the parent. The school could have said they weren’t going to remove it but they chose to remove it themselves. I’m sure the reason was for self-preservation with the principal fearing being fired by the school board, and the school board fearing being replaced by der Führer DeSantis.

Having said that I still think most children at that age lack the ability to comprehend such a serious social issue.

Apparently there is pending legislation in the state legislature that would mandate the removal of books or other material if even a single parent so requested. With all the talk of parental rights how about parents who want their children exposed to a variety of material including some that a small minority may find offensive? When DeSantis and his acolytes in the Republican Party use the term "parental rights" what they're really talking about is the right of parents who happen to be overly sensitive right-wing snowflakes to impose their views on everyone else.

Then my suggestion would be for those other parents to get together and complain louder to drown out that single parent.

You mean that lady in the powder blue short shorts with the hot pink tube top in need of washing? That lady with the sunrise tramp stamp that’s morphing into a starfish wrestling an octopus because of the excess flab? That lady with the unlit Marlboro bouncing up and down from her lips as she tells the principal and teacher that they can kiss her ass? Yeah I met her too many times.

Other option is to take advantage of the law like the Bible is porn in Utah and start protesting other books and videos that don't show the facts about the history in question. No discussion of Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks just asked to move and not why, or don't teach about the Rosewood massacre - sorry my kids are being made uncomfortable by having their history "white washed" and I'd like those books to be pulled.

The problem here is that the victims are children. Education should not be politicized.

Isn't this how the system should work though? There will never be unanimous agreement on what the "right" age is so you give parents the ability to opt out. Your opinion that this age is too young is 100% valid and you would have the ability to have your child opt out. 58 out of 60 parents disagree with your opinion, which is fine, and chose to opt in. That all seems like a pretty sensible way to approach the situation.

Little late for that.... it's always been politicized. Having Ruby Bridges going to the school was political and not wanting to teach about her now is political.

I was just posting my opinion on the appropriate age, not advocating against the showing, and I agree that one person shouldn’t have veto power over any part of the curriculum.

Winning argument here against the trans bathroom ban (forgive this gentleman for being a Nole):

What's his basic argument? I'm a trans man, do you really want to pass a law forcing me to use the same restroom as your wife or daughter? How is that fair to them? How is that fair to me? Doesn't it traumatize them and put me in danger?

Reported on Rachel tonight that DeSantis has released to the press a statement, containing two references to Soros, that he would not assist in the extradition of Trump to New York. A copy of the release was shown. I venture to say this would probably also be a first in American history.

DeSantis is shamelessly pandering to the base - in both senses of the word "base".

Assuming the paperwork is in order, he has to assist. He has zero discretion under Florida law or the US Constitution. If he declines to issue a Governor's warrant, he will be sued in Federal court.

It won't come to it. Trump will surrender, walk free that day, and bask in the hoopla. But it does show what a spineless little pansy DeSantis is that he's still sucking up to Trump.

Don’t be fooled. DeSantis knew that Trump was going to voluntarily surrender before he released his “look at me” press release.

Sounds like due to the übersnowflakes there will have to be “permission slips” before every single class lecture teaching History or Social Studies.

But if it’s true 58 out of 60 had actually signed, then even that bizarro world arrangement isn’t actually good enough for these psychos, they want to impose false histories on the 58/60.

Well Ruby was a young girl and forced to comprehend much more than a movie. Agree with you that a signed permission slip should be as far as the issue even goes.
