He's not going to expand his base by appealing to the fringe eighties that want to see our educational system damaged to promote their agenda. I’m very curious how the DeSantis censorship will play out in the moderate states that value education like Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Michigan. I don’t think his antics will play well there, if the Dems run an effective campaign (a big IF given how putrid the campaign was run in Florida for the governorship).

DeSantis not unlike Trump will mobilize younger and minority voters to turnout and vote against him especially in the swing states. Although he isn't as personally odious as Trump, younger voters aren't exactly big fans of a theocratic authoritarian who is building his political career on the culture wars. As another poster pointed out on this board DeSantis's popularity in Florida is probably much more attributable to his ending the Covid lockdowns in a state largely dependent on tourism then his positions on cultural issues. The lockdowns killed the state's economy and once they were ended it bounced back in a big way. In Nevada another state largely dependent on tourism the only Democratic candidate for statewide office who lost was the incumbent governor largely because he supported Covid lockdowns which seriously harmed that state's tourism based economy. I consider this to be a Republican issue and have no idea who would win the primary between Trump and DeSantis. But just curious, what long-shot candidate outside of those two could possibly win? Seems like Trump would have to go to jail and DeSantis would have to completely implode for a third candidate to rise out of ashes.

Actually a rather accurate description. When it comes to policy positions and legislation when Governor Ron says "Jump!" the response of the legislature is "how high?" If it were not for gerrymandering there is a good chance that the legislature would be less compliant even if a Republican majority.
