It's a valid analogy and Scott Walker is not the only time a favorite or even strong candidate for a party's nomination faded once the primaries actually began. Some other examples of favorites before the primaries actually began who ended up failing include George Romney, the father of Mitt and governor Michigan, the favorite for the 1968 Republican nomination, Ed Muskie, the 1972 Democratic favorite, Gary Hart, the 1988 Democratic favorite, and much more recently Rudy Giuliani, America's mayor and the pre-primary favorite for the 2008 Republican nomination. Although it is logically counter intuitive the more Trump is attacked by the mainstream media and the more likely it is that he will be indicted for his various crimes the stronger his candidacy for nomination becomes.

I may be wrong, but I don't recall Democrats predicting they'd take over Florida - which the Republicans have controlled and dominated for nearly thirty years. What I do recall is seeing Republicans post things like they didn't want all the people moving here from blue states like New York and California. Apparently, they're okay with that now that it appears the new-comers tend to vote Republican.
The results of last year have zero to do with this years team. You can make guesses but that's all they are. Guesses. For example, FAU was 19-15 last year. Raise your hand if you had them in your final four this year with a 35-3 record. Last year's record had zero to do with this years record.

That's just beyond dumb. Georgia has won 2 NCs in a row. Many of the players on the first NC team were also on the 2nd. And a quick look at FAU's roster shows that this year's top 3 scorers were also on last year's team. Teams aren't blank slates at the start of every year.
It's not an all or nothing proposition. Yes, both parties engage in gerrymandering when redistricting is done. The GOP has taken it to new levels. A party that is the minority nationwide has a disproportionate amount of power. Part of that is baked into the system apart from gerrymandering as states with more cows than people have the same level of representation in the Senate as states with millions of people.
