I've always been pretty happy with Miller's Ale House, and at several different locations. Food is pretty good, humans are generally neither awful sportos nor hipsters, lots of TVs, and the wait staff and bartenders are very accommodating when trying to find the game you want. And typically will provide you with a personal loudspeaker tuned into the channel you want, if you ask.
2012 Atlanta GA. The day after the infamous infield-fly rule playoff game, I stopped by our local sports bar/pizza place for a quick bite. Just a few people in the place. All the tvs are on Fox Sports South which is showing a replay of the game from the night before. I'm looking around in dismay - how can the local sports bar be showing the replay of one of the worst defeats in team history and no one cares or notices? In Pittsburgh, Boston, Philly, Chicago... basically anywhere in the NE or midwest, every single TV in that place would have been shattered and the bar manager hung in effigy. Iffy call against Braves sets off Turner Field fans
You got that right. Back in the day I would struggle to find the hoops games on the radio when Norm Sloan and Lon were coaching. It's always been my dream to roll out of the football season into the basketball season where every game is highlighted, even on the local news, win or lose. Still waiting...
At least things are better now because everyone and his brother have cable TV networks with lots of air to fill. So every Gator game is televised. That gets me a' thinkin' (and that's not easy to do)... does the SEC have rules against league schools having their own networks? If a big school like UF doesn't have one, it makes me think there's a rule against it. But University of Texas has its own network and they're joining the SEC in, what, a year or two?
I want to share a secret with you... in a couple of cities in Florida some businesses have opened up and they are called (shhh) "Sports Bars." Now, I will not guarantee you that they will be playing college basketball games on the TVs, but there is a significantly higher percentage chance that they will. Good hunting!
My annual rant is that the next coach to get good players and teach them what a good shot is might not ever lose a game again. The number of bad shots by good teams is mind boggling, each one is essentially half a turnover and there are dozens in most games. It’s why Knight won three national titles without a single high school all American. But now it’s all about letting the kids play” and “not wanting to get in their heads”. Losses get on your head worse than being told your shot selection blows. /rant.
Yes… we have one of these so-called “sports bars” here in my community. It’s called “Lefty’s”. The thread is titled “annual rant” bc a year ago I posted the same complaint… after attending said “sports bar” during March Madness opening Thursday. As I recall, most of the TVs had some sort of “bloopers” show being aired. Wildly funny, but alas … not sports.
I think they will be thrilled with my endorsement of the Alice Springs Chicken. The new strawberry/pecan salad is also delicious, if in the mood for something light. My guess is, this post will elicit the revelation pecans make you constipated… or some other debbie-downer post. You must be a riot at parties!
i missed the part where I denigrated them, her or anyone else. My commentary was about the lack of interest in basketball within the state of Florida. If that wasn’t evident, then my intended light-hearted post missed the mark.
Yes, I made the same observation last year… commenting about the number of TVs in my local sports bar that were airing something other than a basketball game. It too was a light-hearted commentary on the lack of basketball enthusiasm in Florida. Again- that’s really what my post was attempting to convey. It was not a critique on Outback, nor was last year an attack on Lefty’s. They were presumably not airing basketball bc few care about basketball. If you walked into an Outback in Indiana, Kentucky or North Carolina… do you think the games might be on the TVs? I do. And so that was the point. And it was largely meant as a joke, But, I’m still not seeing where I made fun of the bartender who was kindly … and yes, I used the word “kindly” in my initial post… seeking the game. Like other things on this forum… I think you took this post tad too seriously. It is possible I missed the mark, but the ratings suggest most understood it’s intent. I am sorry you did not. I truly meant no harm.
i suspect, in the context of the post she might. In fact, she was my server and was laughing when I lamented to her about being a basketball fan in Florida. At the very least… I highly doubt she’d be offended, and certainly not nearly as bothered as you seem to be.
Seriously, it seems like someone got pee in their cheerios today. They've been a good contributor on the whiskey thread, so I hate to be critical, but don't get the acrimony.
I always hated Bob Knight because he was a psychopath, but there's no denying his coaching acumen. IU ran a motion offense, and if every guy stuck to their roles within it, they were really hard to beat.
The last three years of Bob Knight - He recruited and signed three (in a row) of the "State of Indiana players of the year". All THREE left. Knight was one miserable SOB when he left IU. Reports from practice suggest he got so bad that kids just started quitting on him because he was such a jerk.
