I decided to start a thread to keep separate the weekly standings in the SEC and the national standings so anyone that wants to track how we are doing as it relates to the SECT and Regional Hosting. I'm not sure how often I will get the updates in so please feel free to add anything you like as we go. I'll start by pulling in the SEC update and then the NCAA ranking in the next two posts. Thanks to all who care to participate.
SEC Standings after Week 1 South Carolina 3-0 20-1 Kentucky 3-0 18-2 Arkansas 3-0 18-2 Missouri 3-0 16-3 Vanderbilt 3-0 16-5 LSU 2-1 18-2 Florida 2-1 18-4 Alabama 1-2 17-4 Texas A&M 1-2 14-6 Tennessee 0-3 15-6 Ole Miss 0-3 14-6 Auburn 0-3 13-6 Georgia 0-3 13-7 Mississippi State 0-3 13-8 Notes: I think it was helpful to the rest of the league that LSU lost 1 this weekend, especially for Florida. LSU and UF both wish they would swept but they have work to do to keep from falling further back. It was surprising how many sweeps there were and how some of those 0-3 teams respond this weekend, hello Mississippi and Tennessee. Of the 3-0 teams it seems Vandy and Arky kind of took the lead but its just the first weekend. Let's give it another week and see how they all settle out after Week 2 before we start to infer the what ifs on the season.
NCAA National Rankings 3/20/2023 (Last number is previous week ranking) 1 LSU 18-2 1 2 Wake Forest 18-3 4 3 Florida 18-4 5 4 Vanderbilt 16-5 6 5 Arkansas 18-2 7 6 Louisville 17-2 8 7 UCLA 15-3 13 8 Virginia 17-2 14 9 Stanford 13-5 9 10 East Carolina 16-4 10 11 South Carolina 20-1 16 12 Tennessee 15-6 2 13 Ole Miss 14-6 3 14 Texas Tech 18-4 22 15 North Carolina 15-5 18 16 Boston College 14-3 NR 17 Miami 14-6 NR 18 Campbell 15-3 19 19 FGCU 16-4 20 20 Oklahoma State 16-5 12 21 Texas A&M 14-6 15 22 Missouri 16-3 NR 23 Kentucky 18-2 NR 24 West Virginia 15-4 NR 25 Grand Canyon 14-5 NR
Looking over the top 20 made me wonder if FGCU has a great year, good enough to be a host site, does their home field have a stadium big enough to host a regional? Anyone ever been there for a game and know? Google maps shows about 14 rows of chairs but the stadium doesn't even make it to the dugouts. I wonder if they could move their Regional to JetBlue Park or Hammond Stadium.
I hate that Ole Miss got swept with us going to their place this weekend. We'll need better pitching from Caglionone & Waldrep to win the series. Plus have to hit the ball better.
Bama not ranked?? hmm,, bet UF players would disagree..not that it matters in the least. I guess they dropped out last week after being uncompetitive w/ Columbia. D1 is very selective in their constant overreactions each weekend..
They were ranked #24 last week by D1, but even after playing UF their RPI is only #38 (Gators are #20 in the RPI), so that helps explain why they dropped out of the Top 25.
Our travel team played there a lot....it's not horrible but certainly less than the big schools. I'm not sure what the NCAA requirements are, didn't ND host last year with a pretty cracker box stadium?
I assure you rpi has zero influence on media rankings. espec D1. Bama rpi went up a bit after UF series actually lol and UF dropped a couple spots. They(media) just overreact at the scorerboard per weekend was my point.. Sometimes losing 2 of 3 is deserving of a bump in polls(like in rpi) And sometimes winning 2/3 isnt impressive.. Wake Forest for example(rpi 28) up to #2, off winning 2/3 at home vs ND.. Same ND that lost series to Lipscomb, who had lost 11 straight last I looked(pre this weekend) IMO the ELO at warrens is best non rpi poll. Not exactly sure of formula, some combo of rpi, overall record sos. and maybe media polls, not sure But I disagree w/ it a lot also.. they currently have Ark at 2,,, no chance. this will be worse hogs team in while,,might still be top 10 ish..lol but not the regular Hogs from what Ive seen. at LSU this week,,hope im wrong ELO Chess Ranking - 2023 College Baseball | WarrenNolan.com
I like Warren Nolan's a lot. His site has Florida's RPI at #20, Bama's at #43. It's interesting, but meaningless this early in the year. Just want to be in the Top 16 of the real rankings to host a regional and Top 8 for a Super Regional at the end of the year when it really matters.
yup , great site. it replaced Boyds for me as go to site , Boyds just never evolved/updated site,,but still good info there. warrens rpi is always exactly same as 'official' one,,ncaa I guess??. it just updates live at warrens. so never at same time lol same formula though. the elo is usually prety accurate by years end based on host, etc.. I think 15 of 16 host last year were in elo top 16 .
then youre not paying attention .. lost 5 of last 7, and first 3 game losing streak in 3 years(shocked even me) actually still ranked in a poll i value over D1 ..by a lot. D1 was ONLY poll not ranked in prior to last week. so theyll need to rattle off like 15-20 in a row before youll see them ranked by D1. and still will need to look at bottom of list..lol 40th in both rpi and elo which is about right if not too high. If dont get ace back and 3 or 4 of missing starters soon. it will keep getting worse. Couple were expected back at Ark including ace, but didnt risk it w/ all 3 games in 30s. Rebuild year along w/ injuries to arguably best hitter and unarguably best P is a bad combo
I believe both JetBlue and Hammond are home to minor league teams, so probably not unless their schedules permit. If fgcu was so lucky to host, I assume that they just add some temporary seating.
i do ,,is there a color guide im not aware of ??? I figured being sarcastic,, is that what green means? lol i wont have to figure in future if so
SEC Standings After Week 2 South Carolina 6-0 23-2 Vanderbilt 6-0 19-5 Kentucky 5-1 21-3 Florida 5-1 22-4 LSU 4-2 21-3 Arkansas 4-2 20-4 Tennessee 3-3 19-6 Missouri 3-3 17-6 Alabama 2-4 19-6 Auburn 2-4 16-7 Georgia 1-5 15-9 Texas A&M 1-5 15-9 Ole Miss 0-6 15-9 Mississippi State 0-6 14-11 Notes: I personally am glad that LSU and Arkansas started 4-2. Both of them will be making a run late in the season while we battle South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky in the last half of the SEC. This weekend LSU hosts Tennessee and Arky hosts Alabama. Hopefully they both lose another. SC and Vandy will probably sweep their next series again. SC plays at MSU and Vandy hosts Uga. We just need to go win one game at a time hosting Auburn this weekend, make sure we win the series, and hopefully go for the sweep if we take care of Game 1 and Game 2.
The Gators are currently 22-4 which is their best start since 2016 when they started the year 23-3. 2016 started with the Gators going 23-1 before suffering two losses at Kentucky the second week of SEC play. That year the Gators would lose in the SECT final to TA&M, win their Regional in 3 straight, beat FSU 2 out of 3 in the Supers, before losing their first 2 at the CWS, and finishing 52-16.
That was the year we lost Alonso down the stretch for a month due to a broken hamate & then lost to Coastal Carolina 1st round of CWS who won it all. One of our most talented teams ever. Set the stage for the team to come back next season. Sully & UF finally win the title in 2017 with a slightly less talented team on the backs of our Big 3 starters against LSU…
At this point the eastern division teams are dominating the conference. The Bama and Mississippi schools are dragging down the west.
