I posted this in the insider hoops forum a couple minutes ago, but I meant to post it here where there is more traffic. In the last two minutes of the game that just ended, Purdue players slapped an FDU player on his arms. As a result, the FDU player lost the ball out of bounds. Instead of calling a foul, the official swallowed his whistle and simply called it out of bounds with possession to FDU. Because it was in the last two minutes, they reviewed it. They awarded the ball to Purdue because the Purdue players never touched the ball. But again, they obviously hacked the FDU player on the arms to cause the ball to go out of bounds. A rule change is it needed, IMO. When the review shows a clear foul caused the loss of possession, the officials should be able to either assess a foul based on the video, or at least award possession to the team that lost possession as a result of the foul. Fortunately, FDU still pulled off the 16/1 upset!
I agree with you under the proviso they can’t review/change foul calls at any other times during a game. They get so many calls wrong, reviews with foul call reversals would be a very long nightmare that would ruin watching the game. Not only that, think of the many times we’ve seen reviews in basketball and football that still don’t enable the officials to make the correct call. I think we just accept the fact basketball is a hard game to officiate and they will miss calls. - we only hope they even out at the end of the game (unlike what happens at Rupp and Tuscaloosa often)
For years I've felt like NBA officials neglect foul calls when a player is hit, slapped, over the back, etc. and the ball goes out of bounds off the player who was fouled. It often appears that the refs opt to just give the ball to the team that was fouled. I didn't get to see the Purdue game, but it sounds like this was a "two wrongs" incident.
I've felt for a long time that, as long as you're already reviewing the play, review the whole play, not just the suspected infraction. If a foul caused the turnover but was missed during the live action, call it a foul if it's obvious while reviewing the turnover. That's only fair.
I'll apparently be in the minority but when I played and coached I wanted consistent officiating all game. If they're allowing contact all game, you adjust. Why change it in the last 2-minutes? There would have been 4-5-6 fouls (at least) that either stopped a score or created a turnover that led to a score so why are they more important and need to be reviewed in the last 2:00? Maybe it wouldn't have even been close with different officiating. It would usually change the entire feel of a game though and we all know and anticipate refs swallowing their whistles near the end of tight games. Win the game on the floor and play through contact. I don't know how we lived with "bad calls" and "missed calls" for so many decades without the late-game reviews. Just my 2-cents though. I could be persuaded . . .
Yes, me too, but they might come up with some moronic scheme to rewind/review the entire game from the tip and we’d never go to sleep.
I can’t persuade as I completely agree with you! I’ll bet many or most here do as well. The problem as you said is when the refs all of a sudden change up their consistency and teams can’t adjust. We’ve seen this burn us many times. I think this is when coaches who are in the refs ears the whole game may have a leg up over stoic coaches, however, albeit small.
