Bright lines are naturally elusive, and it's a fair question. But we do have historic legal precedent for what constitutes crimes against children. I imagine there is even more hesitance to prosecute when there is parental consent or action. Obviously, even parents themselves can and should go to prison for beating or sexually abusing their own children. One objective metric I think should/must absolutely apply is that the line must be based upon the explicitness of the content and be evaluated independent of the sexual orientation or sexual identity of the adults or whether their attire is traditionally gender-conforming. Of course, there are people who have argued that some Super Bowl shows were obscene or pornographic based upon the suggestive dancing, grinding, crotch grabbing, etc. But I think there are many who simply have a religious/moral objection to LGBT acceptance. That's their right, but that isn't and shouldn't be legally relevant in any way.
Fair enough. Put them at the same advantage/disadvantage as any other religion. Nothing more or less. I hate when any religion tries to force their beliefs on me. If LGBTQ did so I'd rage against them like I would any other practiced religion. Honestly. I don't look down on religious people either, quit the opposite, I envy the ability to just have faith as it's a gift I've never received. I have looked for it though.
"Religions" do not get non profit status. 401C's (for example) do. A specific church has to provide a service deemed worthy in order to have that status and churches, religious food banks, religious child sponsorship organizations, religious homeless shelters etc, can have them removed if they do not. It isn't a blanket "religion" that gets that status. There are already gay non profits that provide a good to the community. An "entire community" religious, LGBTQ, etc can not claim any status.
How in the heck did Scientology get recognized/tax exemption and protections afforded other/older ones? Just curious how it all works.
To be clear, i never suggested banning or regulating expression. As you may remember from the cake baker story, I thought that was the larger legal issue at play. I am suggesting that much like GTA for instance, that regulated INFORMATION should be available that lets parents...*Wait for it*... Choose. I have zero interest in the government hitting a slippery slope of banning adults from doing as they wish in an adult setting.
What are the general determinants of what values become law? 1. The constitution - any law must be consistent with the explicit language of the constitution and the values it explicitly and implicitly espouses 2. The prevailing majority / consensus view 3. Precedent - we typically defer to the past unless there is a compelling reason to change. 4. What does the rest of the civilized world do? While we aren’t tied to this, looking at what developed countries do is at least a signal of what are considered general human values. A total abortion ban fails all of those criteria. The criteria most pro lifers are using is: - what do I want? - what does God want? It seems like among conservatives there is a greater sense of whatever they think should be law, regardless of what most people think and all of those criteria I listed above. You are offended when I throw out Taliban, but the point is your line of thinking - that what I want and what God wants should be forced on everyone else whether they like it or not, is similar to Sharia law. That doesn’t mean you support honor killings or female genital mutilation, but they do, and that’s where they draw their line.
Moronic. Who the hell is grooming what children? The Boy Scouts? Catholics? Oh, you mean entertainers from the stage in a hypothetical situation in right wing perverted heads? I mean seriously. Parents don’t show up surprised at shows and they don’t go to shows that are inappropriate for their kids. What really are you even talking about?
But you do have significant interest in dictating how parents raise their kids and the decisions they make.
They had to apply. To clarify a church can exist as a non profit without a homeless shelter type of service offering. The religious instruction would serve as the "good" offered. Scientology isnt really tax exempt because it is a " religion" but rather a church. Here is a good read: Starting a Nonprofit: What is “Religious” under 501(c)(3)?
From the previews I thought “Life of Pi“ was a talking animal movie my 10 year old would enjoy. Imagine my surprise when the animals didn’t talk and were eating each other on a marooned boat at sea as an allegory for a boat that turned cannibal at sea mentally scarring a kid that was there…. I googled halfway through and left before the unveil. Only time I remember being surprised by what I got into.
By wanting a warning label or age appropriate notices beforehand? Have you read the thread or are you just creating an opinion. Im not saying a parent cant take their kid to an R rated movie or let them play cOD or other video games. (My kid does). I want the parent aware. Is that really an issue to you?
Saying it over and over does not make it true. I support your constitutional right to do all sorts of things that I may think violate Gods laws. Does the Taliban do that? Whats offensive is you take 9ne subject, abortion, where I dont think a woman should be criminally prosecuted (the doctor maybe) and twist that into some warped Taliban language. What does the Taliban think about gays? What does the Taliban think about my wife's leggings, shorts, flip flops, uncovered head? What does the Taliban think about the beer I plan to have at dinner? What does the Taliban think about capital punishment? What does the Taliban think about my daughter getting her degree? What does the Taliban think about my wife having a career? I think healthy women with healthy unborn babies should be restricted on the level that they can terminate that healthy unborn life. The hyperbolic nature of your use of the term is just that. The Taliban would want them executed for abortion. The Taliban would want them executed if they got pregnant out of wedlock. The Taliban would want their dad to perform a justice killing or whatever they call it. The term is nonsensical and you use it to inflame and sway emotion.
So this is all about warning labels? You are channeling 1980’s Tipper Gore? Fine. Put warning labels. But do you really think that is the issue? If you take kids to one of these shows, are you really shocked if it may get a bit raunchy? Were there masses of shocked attendants leaving? And is revoking a liquor license a proportionate response?
Again you completely avoid the point. You want to enforce your largely religious based views on everybody else just like the Taliban do. The only difference is you have different values.
Good lord man. None religious folks are pro life too. And the Taliban do this with 100's of laws, we are talking about one issue. The taliban would want the woman beheaded. I haven't even condoned her arrest.
I don’t care what anyone’s kids see that aren’t mine. I have no problem policing my own. However, a major issue in our society today is a lot of kids have no supervision or if they do have parents then those parents don’t care. Ask any educator from elementary, middle or high school and I’d guess they would say most parents are apathetic. A babysitter is all they want from the school system. It’s one of the major reasons why I’m convinced our society is getting dumber by the generation. The movie Idiocracy becoming reality.
Very good points. What is considered explicit should be all encompassing and not limited to orientation or identity. Simulating masterbation and prosthetics genitalia is not good for kids. If someone wants that for their kids, I mean good luck, but I should at least have the info beforehand.
Has there been any actual evidence of these claims from the state's complaint? I'm not really willing to take them at their word for properly characterizing anything in this arena considering their anti-LGBT agenda. I admit I wouldn't be 100% surprised if such a drag show actually included a latex replica va-jay, but I also wouldn't be 100% surprised if they put a very fluffy pillow over their crotch while using a euphemism, and the state exaggerated.
Of course my point is based on the states position being accurate. If those things did not happen than I see no issue foe the complaint. Time will tell I suppose.
