The Secret Service is investigating. Gustavo Ribeiro Trelha was arrested in Seattle for credit card skimming. Santos appeared in court at the bail hearing as George Anthony Devolder on behalf of Trelha. He flew out there twice. During the hearing he identified himself as Devolder and stated twice that he worked for Goldman Sachs in New York. The audio recording of his court testimony is in the link.

Trelha has provided a sworn affidavit that Santos taught him how to clone credit/debit cards, construct skimmers and provided the equipment he used in Seattle. They were supposed to split the proceeds, but Santos (surprise) ripped him off.

Ah, to the untrained eye it appears to be scamming, but to the trained eye, he successfully ran a small business. Now the government wants to punish success. Shame!

Or something like “The Informant!”. The Matt Ramon movie about price fixing at Archer Daniels Midland. You need that almost over the top subtle irony through it all.

It’s actually kind of embarrassing for the govt this guy is still walking around free, but then again, this particular credit card skimming op might not be a great case if all they have is a sworn affidavit from a convicted criminal and alleged partner. Obviously I don’t doubt the circumstances given this guys background, but they’d need more to bring a case. Where’s the money trail?

They do apparently have him red handed lying to the judge about his employment circumstances among other things. Under oath?

Whatever happens, I doubt it goes normally.

Anyone think this guy would attempt to flee back to Brazil or some non-extradition county? When’s the last time a U.S. congressperson was a fugitive from Justice? Given the craziness to this guy, wouldn’t be at all surprising. Sounds to me like he modeled his life after Catch Me if You Can or Talented Mr. Ripley.

He's wanted in Brazil for the stolen checkbook caper.

I did not hear the Seattle judge administer an oath in the bond hearing prior to his testimony.

If he were running from the First District of Florida or the 14th District of Georgia.

But in the meantime he is cashing those checks as a Congressman.

And he most likely will continue to do so until December 31, 2024 given that Kevin McCarthy will need his vote again if there ever is a motion to vacate the chair.

Given his district, he likely wins re-election easily. Him and Desjarlais are quite the pair from Tennessee.

Santos has apparently been charged, but the indictment is not public so uncertain if it is related to this
