When it comes to recruiting high school players, Todd Golden and his staff have been extremely aggressive going after the top available players in the 2024 class, with a complete lack of fear when it comes to competing against the top programs in the country.

Important info missing is what was his major and does UF have a top graduate program in his field. Wasn't something like that a huge deal in the recruitment of Canyon Berry?

Speaking of Canyon his chase down block was a thing of beauty and critical but Cheese will get some airtime during the NCAAs for his buzzer beater.

Majored in Sociology. So it's wide open at UF.
Canyon Barry majored in nuclear physics, and UF is a top place for that. Involves atoms and whatnot.

I was at a meeting about something a few years ago and we were discussing academic reputations. A member of the UF Sociology Department said that the department at Harvard actually was not highly regarded.

That might not matter anymore? I thought the reason for that rule was so a grad transfer could be immediately eligible. A loophole so they didn’t have to sit out a year. Now everybody is eligible by default. If he majored in sociology it’s hard to see it as an issue. Now he went to Harvard in the first place, and he stayed through graduation without the perks of athletic scholarship, so obviously academics were important. But I’m guessing even if he took academics seriously I’m guessing this is likely somewhat of a basketball decision and chance to get NIL money. Basically, he got his Harvard degree. Fulfilled a goal. Now he’s a free agent.

LOL. If you major is sociology then academics are NOT important to you.

Is a sociology degree highly regarded anywhere ? I mean it’s not like a Phy Ed degree like me !

If you say so. At UF it’s certainly a joke major. At Harvard, I wouldn’t be so sure.

I’d think it’s mostly a major for people who plan to pursue law school or graduate school. Undergrad? Perhaps not so much.

But as far as UF vs. Harvard if you get your BS in sociology.

    Avg Starting Salaries:
    UF Grad 26k
    National Average 30k
    Harvard Grad 56k

Sounds like the UF grad is working at Starbucks, even worse than national average for *all* sociology grads. The Harvard grad must have some more decent professional opportunities. Which isn’t surprising, I’d guess that holds true in most fields, even ones UF is strong in.

Hmmm . . . . What is your source? Zip recruiter (perhaps not the most reliable) shows avg of 56k. A more reputable source indicates 96k median for sociologists with master's degrees.
Sociologists : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

    According to another source:
The average salary for an entry level Sociologist is $39,295. An experienced Sociologist makes about $76,710 per year.

We are getting off topic, but a “sociologist” is someone with an advanced degree. Similar to how a person with a bachelors in psychology is in no way a “psychologist” a person with only a BS in sociology is not likely a “sociologist”. A bachelors degree in either isn’t that useful unless moving onto professional programs or law school. Harvard maybe opens a few more doors… because it’s Harvard.

The original point was whether it was “compatible” with him being a grad transfer. But I said I doubt that’s even relevant in the portal era. It used to be a grad transfer was one of the few paths to immediate eligibility (not having to sit out a year), now it seems sitting a year is a thing of the past. Everyone is eligible immediately. For all we know, he may not even be required to seek a masters in sociology in order to transfer or even enroll in grad school at all (presumably he has to at least enroll as a student).

Anyone know how soon the transferring student athletes typically commit?

So now he’ll be studying the complexities of inter family marriages? And it’s effects on urban development?
