As a child I watched the movie "Some Like It Hot", an Oscar nominated comedy in which two of the characters dressed in drag to hide from the Mafia. Apparently even back then drag triggered religious fanatics. This is a reference to the reaction of National Catholic Legion of Decency to the movie: “In correspondence dated 5 Mar 1959, the Very Reverend Monsignor Thomas F. Little of the National Catholic Legion of Decency found Some Like It Hot to contain ‘screen material elements that are judged to be seriously offensive to Christian and traditional standards of morality and decency … The offense in costuming was obvious.’ The difference between then and now is that back then religious fanatics didn't dominate one of the two major political parties and didn't have their own media outlets promoting their theocratic viewpoints.
Back in the day clowns groomed us by throwing us candy in parades. I do remember one clown who had oranges stuffed in his shirt. He did a handstand and the oranges fell out. Maybe that’s where it began to go downhill.
Many of DeSantis’ supporters have used this idea of popularity to defend his actions, but we would clearly not have far to go to find ideas that are popular, yet improper. Moreover, regardless of the popularity of this particular act, I think you know that you are brushing over the real issue of significance. That the offending action is a drag show is irrelevant. The salient point is that the state is sanctioning a private entity for breaching the values of the state leaders. I don’t care if this issue isn’t a “winner”; it’s flat out illiberal, and I’m surprised that you are defending it.
Under 17 attending an R rated movie can be accompanied by an adult. NC-17 is a total ban for anyone under 17. Upon review however, you are correct. The MPAA is jot legally binding but is self enforced by the industry.
There were men that dressed up as women and we thought it was funny. Nowadays little boys probably think, “Hmm, it could work.”
Pointing out unhinged posts, no. Acting like you cant be unhinged on this board within the rules without being personally attacked. Screw that. Ban him or edit him like anyone else if he isnt following the rules but if you think you or the right wing goons on this thread are owed anything.... well.
Are you sure your 17 year old didn’t sneak down there without you? That’s what we would have done when I was that age.
I dont think kids should hear about the crucifixion of Christ. It's too violent. I would like to ban all kids from Easter related services. I also dont think they should go to wrestling events... too violent. They definitely should not be allowed to go to the beach.... where bikinis are worn. There are lots of books I dont want to expose to kids that might make them feel bad for being white. And finally, spot on... no drag shows for kids.
Thank you, Tilly. Obviously my memory of that occasion was faulty. I'm sure @intimigator1 will clarify the details when he returns to the thread. Nonetheless, the original charge that started this brouhaha was a cheap shot.
One thing I will agree about is that I think this drag queen issue is a net positive for DeSantis. About 70% of Americans now support same sex marriage and a slight majority of Republicans even. As I understand it, DeSantis has opposed same sex marriage and has not changed his view on that as far as I can tell. If that's accurate, he's in the minority on that even within his own party. I think focusing on the drag shows with kids (the fight with Disney, calling people groomers, etc.) is a way he can signal being anti LGBT to get the conservative Christian voters. Meanwhile, he doesn't have to address a broader issue like same sex marriage because the Supreme Court ruled on that - not that longer-standing Court precedent mattered with respect to abortion.
That would be a very effective strategy and probably explains a lot of his manufactured pique. "Ah, he's alright - he hates them groomers and drag queens same as us"
Here's my question: did the Hyatt sponsor or create the event, or just lease the space to a third party?
If you go by this article looks like they leased it along the lines of a concert Another drag show showdown: Florida targets prominent Miami hotel’s liquor license
You, 51 and FLgtr all are acting like you guys... you guys are owed some allegiance to your posts and your clearly unAmerican positions because one of you helped out someone who needed help. I think that is insane. And yes, you are acting like you are owed something. For a Christian what an un-Christian way to behave. Wow you got my unAmerican and unChristian label in one post. Double hex on you.
