Is he going to sleep with Napier's wife or did Urban sleep with his wife? I donno which rumor is more believable. But welcome back anyway.
Welcome back. Let him get to work with these young wrs. And tell him which receivers we want on the trail
Gonzalez just coaching up the freshmen we just landed is kind of exciting. Personally I feel this may be an upgrade with on-the-field coaching, maybe a wash on recruiting? Gonzalez might be a better recruiter surrounded by this support staff than he was under Mullen. I'm just glad Napier can consider previous staff and people he hasn't previously worked with in the "best available" list. I also feel it says something about Napier that Gonzalez would be willing to come back and serve under the staff that replaced him, after he already wasn't retained (I assume because Napier knew he had his guy already for WR coach, unless someone knows the story of Gonzalez' departure this last time and if retaining him was even considered).
Some non-receivers that BG supposedly help recruit: RB Lamical Perine (4th) – Florida ’20 – New York Jets OT Jawaan Taylor (2nd) – Florida ‘ 19 – Jacksonville Jaguars RB Jordan Scarlett (5th) – Florida ’19 – Carolina Panthers QB Dak Prescott (4th) – Mississippi State ’16 – Dallas Cowboys
Lol... I thought I was on the baseball thread. We won the game in the end, but it was precarious for 4 full innings.
I hope I remember this correctly. But isn't BG the one that made a big push to Urban about getting some guy named Tebow and said he was a must get?
I will echo the sentiments of pretty much everyone else. Our WRs were well coached 05-09 and 18-20. Not sure WTF happened in 2010 and 2021. Napier needs to light a fire under him 24/7 for recruiting. No more lazy WR recruiting and “we’ll address it in the portal” ala Mullen.
The story I remember repeating was DC Mattison telling Urban that Tebow would change/elevate the program. Or something to that effect.
Hey Gus - So Urban recounted a story about a conversation between him and coach Mattison in the final days of recruiting Tebow. I think it was when coach Shula "spent the night" in jax waiting for committment from Tim. Mattison tells Urban - We invested EVERYTHING in getting Tebow. If he commits to Bama the program will be "set back" at least 5 years. Urban - "Shut Up" Another interesting Mattison story - Mattison told Urban that his defense would hold OSU under a certain yardage (ridiculously low number) Urban said - If you do that I will support any endeavor you want. Sure enough Matty held Urban to it and Urban went to some speaking engagement in "(Wisconsin I think?). I kinda botched the story but hopefully you get it.
Not sure it’s been downward. He had Co-OC titles at a few stops and “passing game coordinator” as well. He hitched his wagon to Mullen which was good until it wasn’t. Mullen got fired and he picked up a WR gig at FAU. Just the nature of the business, either only or best available at the time. Rumors say he was pissed that he didn’t get OC or co-OC when Mullen left Meyer’s staff. And he resigned with a post-it note.
Oh gotcha. Thanks for the correction. I remember the story but forgot who it was. I was thinking it was BG.
The good news is we did end up with Tebow... The other good news is BG was part of a Gator championship program. He then went off to LSU- not a slouch program either. Now he's back, and while a few folks aren't enamored with the hire, I think if you consider we're approaching the Spring game, there's familiarity with Florida, and the fact he's done so well, it should be a win for the football program. If kids are drawn to coaches that have a list of players that were developed and went to the league - then he's the best (realistic) option. Here's to BG continuing his coaching success in Gator town. One positive thing is his coaching acumen, the other is his recruiting prowess... It's all good... Go Gators.
