I’m sure he is a good coach and he does have a nice resume.

Why did we just rehire the guy whose players you just recruited over in one cycle. Was the biggest storyline of the entire offseason last year not about how there was no WR talent in the room? If you liked him a year ago why didn’t you just retain him then? Is this really the best we could do?

Toney,Hammond, Grimes, Jefferson etc are all endorsing this hire and still praise Gonzales as a great coach. They attribute much of their success to his coaching so I'll defer to these guys for their opinion on the hire.

Not talking about you but the other boards are loaded with angry, ignorant comments as expected.

Players can be loyal to even bad coaches but I think position coaches that recieve as much praise as Billy does from his former players are different than a head coach. Players may have emotional ties to a head coach as a person and will therfore defend them even in failure but position coaches can have a tangible track record of performance specifically to a skill set that makes their endorsement more valid to me.

Billy can coach WR’s there’s no doubting that but he’s going to have to recruit too. The current WR room is a by product of him and Mullen

Sure but how much was on Mullen? Maybe they would have stuck maybe not but weren't we in with Bond, Smith and Gibson before everything fell apart?

I agree. I tend to believe it's more about Mullen. He just don't know how to close the deal, or lackadaisical about it.

    Let’s hope that’s on Mullen.

from what I heard last year, after Napier was hired, BG stood out in how hard he worked, spoke positively of the program to recruits during the coaching transition, and busted his hump during bowl practice and post bowl game. Not sure if true but I also heard that Napier appreciated the effort and acknowledged that contribution to Billy G. While many coaches half assed it and others were accused of going out of their way to hurt recruiting and the transition, Billy G did the opposite. If that is somewhat true…probably helped him land the gig.

Had two of the best WR rooms ever under Billy G. Dude can develop, only thing he needs to do is prove he can bring in the elite guys. It’s a solid hire

I’m not angry but I don’t understand the hire. I think Billy G is a good positional coach but I think we could have found someone that is a quality coach that could also be a net positive on the trail. I just think he is coming up on a point where guys he coached are now becoming experienced coaches as well. He wasn’t retained the first time and I’m not sure he was even retained at FAU. I really don’t want to bag on him because I do like Billy G. I just wanted to see something different. Nothing going to lose sleep on the hire but definitely not getting excited for it either.

We will see if it was recruiting under Mullen. Napi seems to be a better recruiter and Lagway should be a positive.

I’m sure at least a portion of it was coming from Mullen. We will see how it all plays out. I just find it hard to believe that 7 guys showed up on campus to interview and this was our best option.

Everyone is a top recruiter under Saban so it makes a big difference. We also know money talks. If everything is equal, you can blame the recruiter but not so if the deck is stacked against him.

The bigger issue to me is that Alabama typically does not hire coaches on a downward trend. A guy who was a HC comes on as a OC/DC or a prior OC/DC who comes on as a positional coach is different than hiring a guy who was not retained by two other staffs and was in the process of being moved to a new position.

That Sal guy we had that couldn’t recruit at all pulled top guys the next year at Bama. They do have their choice of coaches though.
