If this law says that a heartbeat is proof of life, then wouldn’t it be against the law to pull the plug on a brain dead 45 year old? Wouldn’t they be required by law to keep that ticker going regardless of the expense?
You’re correct that fetal heartbeat can’t be detected at six weeks but that hasn’t stopped proponents of bills like this. They claim the electrical impulses translated into sound is proof of a certain foothold on life demanding protection.
If she travels from Mexico to, say, Texas, the latter's law applies. Once born here, the child becomes a US citizen.
Seems like he is being intentionally vague on the issue, but on 2 occasions he reiterated he is pro life and looking forward to signing “great legislation” Only time will tell but by all accounts Desantis seems to want to err on the more extreme side of such issues. He probably doesn’t really want to sign anything for political reasons, but he can’t say that, and the chance at more anti abortion legislation is too enticing for most republicans to pass up. I suspect it gets momentum and he signs. I actually hope I’m wrong.
The slippery slope is on the fast track with our authoritarian dictatorship in Tallacrappy. Florida Republicans propose a 6-week abortion ban
I know at least 3 women that didn't know they were pregnant at 6 weeks. One couple was told by doctors the husband was sterile from cancer treatment. Surprise baby for sure
Desantis has to do this to win over the deplorables. It would go over like a wet fart in an elevator during the general though - so have at it, Meatball Ron.
If that's the political consensus, I think maybe just enough Florida Republicans will protect him from having to make that decision.
No he doesn't. And he will lose a lot of people like me who agree with many of the things he's done but this will make me not vote for him in the future. I'm of the belief abortion should be when the baby can survive on it's own. Not a fan of the 15 week ban from 24 weeks, and going to 6 would be a bridge too far for many people who lean right.
34% of a abortions happen prior to 6 weeks and exceptions for rape and health appear to exist in this. Most people know by week 6. (Not that o er 1/2 of abortions happen by week 7.) So I dont think "not knowing" is that common. Allowing 34% of abortions to continue and allowing health exceptions is a lot more moderate than many on the choice side are claiming.
Isn't this the stuff that people scream at RD about? Forcing his political will on the private sector blah blah blah
Moreover, I’d be willing to bet that most of the women who don’t realize probably aren’t actively trying to get pregnant aka it’s not planned.
You should probably review some data and get back to us. Christians are more than twice as likely to adopt a child over all other groups COMBINED. That doesnt account for all pro life groups either. Just Christians. Christians are 3x more likely to foster. Then check who the largest child aid organizations are both here and abroad. World Vision, Unbound, Compassion International, Samaritan's Purse etc. Then tell me who houses and clothes the most people. Habitat For Humanity, Salvation Army, etc. All Christian run organizations with overwhelming Christian support. You also discount the hundreds of crisis pregnancy centers around the country that support women who keep their own baby with shelter, needs, education etc. You guys have created this goofy narrative based on nothing but your own little circular logic. None of it's true. Christians are the ones adopting, fostering, feeding, housing the children by overwhelming numbers and its frankly not even close. And that extends internationally with massive aid organizations saving kids by the millions from bad water, hunger and health care issues. Good lord you are so wrong its embarrassing.
The 45 year old has likely made that choice in advance. Power of attorney, will, dnr etc. That is a bit different, no?
