I hate to say it but part of our problem is that we just are not that good with the leather. That makes our pitchers think that they need to strike everybody out because they don't trust the guys behind them. First of all that leads to inflated pitch counts. Strikeouts usually take a fair number of pitches. One pitch outs are a pitcher's second best friend behind the double play. Secondly when trying to nibble corners it only takes a small mistake to end up grooving a pitch down the middle and bad things happen most of the time. So not all of the blame should be put on our bullpen, but a lot of it should be. There is other blame to spread around.
Ko David Kopp is our pitching coach and has been a few years now. Not sure why some of our relief pitchers seem to plateau or regress when most come in with very good creds. Part of it is a question of handling the moment but I've seen mechanics go way off and not be rectified. Several guys last year that never recovered their confidence and left the program early. Biggest mysteries over the past few years were Manning and Pogue and Specht in '21- all three had flashes of being quality pitchers but once their mechanics broke down their confidence followed and there seemed no one who could correct it.
