The lever just gets pushed reflexively. Try not to read too much into it.

Now you have moved the target to Gainesville, Florida, as if that is the argument you've been making the whole time. I live in Gainesville, so that is a little different than Austin. I don't want to live in a city like Portland, Seattle, Chicago, etc, and the way I vote is a form of self-defense. I don't want my house or my property looted. I don't want my family to get killed in a rioting looting situation. I don't want to live in a state of anarchy where it is not safe. So, I vote for the welfare of the city I live in to preserve life, private property, and law and order. And I don't regret voting for DeSantis even for one second in that regard.

You know it is interesting that you bring this up. There is an interesting movement going on in Atlanta right now related to this very issue. The northern tip of Atlanta formed by the bypass, I-75, and I-85 is trying to break away from Atlanta and form "Buckhead City" for the very reasons we are discussing related to crime, policing, etc. They are fed up with the BS of policing in Democrat run cities, and they simply want to be able to hire and pay their own police force. I don't think they should be held hostage. If that area wants to form their own independent city, then they should not be held hostage to anarchy-like conditions because Democrats have let policing deteriorate because of their political, social, and racial ideology.

The right to life, the right to have and own property these are the primary reasons governments exist. They use force against people who violate those rights. And they are rights derived from the 10 commandments. Thou shalt not kill, and thou shalt not murder. If a large group decides they want to create conditions that will allow and encourage rioting leading to more murders and theft and destruction of private property, then yeah I am totally justified in wanting to accumulate enough votes so a government force can be put together to stop that. That is the whole point of government...to stop and punish evil. So, if someone wants to deprive me and my neighbor of those God-given rights by neglect or negligence in their management of the city as motivated by their political, social, and racial ideology you bet I am going to oppose them. Your right to run things according to your ideology end when rioting, looting, violence, and anarchy are inflicted on others.

Well this certainly proves useful in illuminating the basis for the thoughts behind this thread.

All of that rambling and it is still true that you advocated taking away the rights of cities to govern themselves how they see fit and want to dominate them. But you frame your attempts to "dominate" (to use your word) as "self-defense" while other people pursuing policies that you don't like (like the ones in Austin, with their much lower crime rate than the city you choose to live in) are just trying to dominate you.

BTW, Gainesville still has a higher murder rate than Austin, by about 40%, so you have really done quite a job stopping that.

Murder rates went up after Austin decreased police spending in the summer of 2020 by $150 million, and now they are higher than they have ever been.

False. As I pointed out in that thread, the murder rate was much higher in 1980 than it was in 2021. You realize Austin is a lot bigger than it used to be and the word "rate" refers to the per capita probability of a murder, right?

Having lived in Atlanta and Buckhead it’s a little more complicated than that but it comes down to racism. And those trying to break buckhead off are the rural counties of Georgia.

My advice to you is to get out and experience the world.

My father-in-law is as blood red a republican as there is. He lives in a beautiful and safe Chicago suburb. Are there unsafe areas of town? Absolutely. People stay away from them. I wouldn't live there due to the winter weather, but it is mostly a fantastic and amazing town with much to offer.

Under his former name and current one yes. Orlandog8r. I went from offering advice to realizing he wasn't open to any. His world is set in stone. Nothing but self fulfilling prophecies and confirmation bias searches.

I know you all so desperately want me to be whoever this Orlandog8r person was but I promise you I am not. So please stop comparing me to someone I am not. It is honestly pretty offensive. I am my own person, even if I don't know who that person is currently.

With that said, I have made the difficult but necessary decision to step back from this forum at this time. I will be focusing on my mental health as it has continued to deteriorate in the last few years. Last night I was at such a low that I did consider the option of ending it all. There are many days I wish I wouldn't even wake up.

My mind tells me every day that there is no room in this country for me. My mind tells me every day that I was born in the wrong generation. That I should've been born 100-200 years ago. My mind tells me that the vast majority of this country wants me dead. My mind tells me every day that I will be an outcast my entire life and will never fit in anywhere. My mind tells me I need to leave the U.S. as I am an outcast here. My mind tells me every day that I will be alone my entire life.

My life has become miserable and while I don't think it will work I am trying to get therapy. I've had three sessions with a therapist since deciding to go back to therapy and we have agreed that I should take a sabbatical from work/regular life for at least two months to focus on myself. I will be doing that to try to figure out who I am. To try to regain some joy in my life. To actually try to enjoy life and not just feel like I'm surviving each day. To maybe see if I can live in this cruel world.

I don't know how it will turn out, but I know it's necessary. I will make a more formal final post later on today but for now this is where I'm at. You all win. Discussions like this are the ones more than anything that make me feel like there's no place in this world, or at least in this country, for me. Discussions like this truly make me realize that I think God made a mistake. I should have been born 100-200 years ago. That's when I would have truly belonged.

CFL, I hear you bud. There’s a lot of noise on this board. I could feel you opening up and some posters missed it.
I hate to hear that you’re not feeling like yourself right now.
I am glad to hear you’re talking to someone about it. Please stay with a therapist as it’s super important to be heard. You need to be able to say whatever you’re feeling without fear of judgment.
Personally I appreciate your honesty on the board. Come back some time to let us know you’re doing ok.

You are not alone. Millions of people across the globe suffer from mental health issues. The 24 a day media and constant flood of information don't help with that. There's a reason why many, many people (even those without mental health issues) are longing for a slower pace or simpler time. Don't single yourself out or beat yourself up. Do seek professional help immediately and stick to that. Hope to see you back soon feeling better.

No one here is trying to "win." Not against you anyway. Life is how you choose to see it and I don't think being born 200 years ago would change it. Anonymous internet posters shouldn't affect you and although some may try, they can't help you either. You seem to need validation. The older I get the less I worry about anyone else's opinions.

I feel sorry for anyone who sees the world so binary as to relegate everything to either liberal or conservative. Women vs men. Etc etc.

I'm not always the happiest person but life is simple. Simple pleasures. This board is the extent of my involvement or awareness of politics. Various family members think the world is ending for opposite reasons because they are consumed with "news." Meanwhile I enjoy the endorphin release from my coffee, guitar, motorcycle, dog, etc. It's a "boring" life at times but dear lord life isn't about some war of ideologies. It can be though if that's how you choose to see it.
