So the dislike is a vote for breaking up the country. Nice of you to chime in Karen!

250 years ago there was much patriotism and breast-beating and cries to break away from the empire.

What part of the post was inaccurate? Or do you just hit the bacon/dislike button like a lab animal hitting the food lever?

California would get the best parks. With Utah a close second. After that, maybe Maine with Acadia and there's some nice ones in Michigan and obviously Tennessee.

True, seems like basically what's happening is that there are much fewer real problems or not the political will to tackle them. People lose sight of the saying "bigger fish to fry".

Regardless of where you live and your political ideologies lie, you live your life and enjoy what this country has to offer outside all this divisive talk.

Someone who can’t live in our society because of political disagreement must, basically, by definition, have intense hate for the opposition. Why else would one feel the need to move?

    clfgator83:

This thread made me think of our discussion last year in a thread about illegal immigration/migration. You said that you feel like you don't really have a country or anything to hold on to and that you believe that you would like living in a country that puts a premium on race or ethnicity - a homogeneous ethnostate. You specifically expressed concern that Hispanics are going to remake America into something you don't recognize. You cited Hungary, Poland and Japan as models of countries you think are closer to ideal.

Have you considered the possibility that your personal desire to live in a society which is culturally and racially/ethnically homogeneous is causing you to project your despair and your feeling of social isolation onto other Americans? Perhaps even subconsciously, you believe that America splitting up into multiple countries would result in at least one "White culture" nation state where you would feel more connected and accepted (and not have to learn another language)? If so, your belief that a national split/divorce is inevitable may be, at least partly, a coping mechanism you are using to manage your stressors about living in a diverse country where you're not sure where or how you fit in.

Anything can happen, but I don't think anything close to what you are describing is going to happen in our lifetimes at least. It does appear, for example, that many conservative White Christians are moving to Idaho because they want to be around people who think like them and/or look like them. That sort of thing may happen more going forward, but that's different than outright secession. I think you should at least try to embrace America's diversity and give it a chance. If that doesn't work, you can at least find the state that you think is the best fit for you and go there.

Many nation-states do have borders that align with ethnic boundaries. The US is an exception, and while this has been a source of discord at times, it also allows the US to be the beacon city on a hill experiment. Our diversity can be seen as a weakness, but it also been a source of strength over time. Splitting the US into separate countries based on political alignment would mean the US experiment had failed. And that people may never be able to live harmony on a very diverse planet. I, for one, am not ready to call our experiment a failure.

Logistically, splitting the country up would be a nightmare. There are over 5.3 million registered Rs in California. And in Arizona, the largest county (Maricopa) is just slightly over 50% registered R, but the second largest county (Pima) is solid blue. And zoom in closer to a place like Phoenix metro, and on the outskirts of the city, it's heavy red. But in the center, and around Arizona State, it's blue. Who gets Arizona and what happens to a place like Tucson (heavy blue), if the state ends up in a red country? Logistically, splitting the country is impossible. And would lead to the war people are trying to evade.

But we can avoid this war and keep the country together if instead of hating diversity, and a belief that all who don't think like us automatically hate us. I would suggest trying having a little empathy. Ask yourself why others who don't look or think like you think the way they do. You may still up disagreeing with them, but understanding their viewpoint can go a long way to living in harmony.

On page 1 of reading this thread, but my immediate reaction (other than the silliness of envisioning the US as the Balkans) is that I think population demographics will solve this issue. Within my clan, we've often termed the era of Trump as the "last hurrah of the angry old white guy". I don't think conservatives will go away, but hopefully the bigot population will decrease. Also, we could all do with a big helping of "You do you, and I'll do me". That includes the left insisting that "different" people and their cultures be , not just accepted/tolerated, but celebrated and the right insisting that they just go away.

10 pages of a "plan" to displace millions of people based on some binary political split fantasy. And EVERYONE has to participate! Yet another "idea" in which some almost incomprehensibly narrow worldview must be imposed on every living being.

How about you and anyone you get to agree with you split off into this alt-country idea, and leave everyone else alone. Say, find two places that are livable but far away from the rest of us and voluntarily divide up into a new Handmaid's Tale season and then let that do whatever it is that ends up doing.

Most people, whether they are faking it or not, call themselves "independents" or "unaffiliated" or some other term that indicates they aren't dogmatic political monoliths.

So maybe rework this idea by leaving the masses out of it. That should solve all the logistical impossibilities!

I would also add Washington State. Olympic, Mount Rainier and North Cascades are pretty nice.

Have said this many times before. Imagine if 24 hours news entertainment, social media and other outlets existed during other periods of strife throughout the history of this country. People would have claimed the u.s. was going to fall apart during the stock market crash, Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam, Civil rights, etc etc.

    We'll get through this...

A lot of those things are things that we can get behind, rough economy, cuban missle crisis etc. That affects everyone in an us versus them, like 9/11. But we seem to get bogged down in stupid shit like bathrooms and drag queens reading books.

Bogged down? Or concerned about common sense and decency…
