Not a fan of the whole trash talking, throat slashing stuff but it is Miami , a program I hate so I give him a pass. Probably just a reaction to some cane histrionics last night. Plenty of work to do, but great to beat the Canes and win the series. This team can certainly hit.
Why did Miami agree to have the run rule in place? Anyone 100% confident we get thru the 9th? Good win.
His HS coach is hard core Cane fan (coached my son in HS).....he would die. Of course he has sent more guys to FSU than anywhere
Watching former Gator Crisp pitch now. Why don't we have Jordan cleats, or have I just not been paying attention?
We can get rid of all this nonsense if pitchers were allowed the "purpose" pitch. Back in the day just hitting a homer against some guys was enough that next time up one was coming in high and tight. A long time ago I was in Cincinnati with my wife and we went to a Dodgers vs Reds game with some friends. It was Fernando vs Mario Soto. In other words it was a convention of headhunters and a great pitching match-up. I can't remember which Reds player hit a dinger off of Fernando but next time up I saw him take strike one. I turned to the folks that went to the game with me and said "He is going down on the next pitch." And like clockwork it was a pitch aimed at the earhole and the batter was soon dusting himself off. They looked at me with an "How did you know that" expression. It amazes me to this day that people can watch baseball all of their lives and never get what is actually going on pitch by pitch. The game has changed, though. These kinds of antics are now allowed and retaliation is penalized. I grew up in an era where you respected your opponent on the field even if you really wanted to beat them badly.
Great game Gators and great job Sully. He stuck to the plan giving Cags his 6 innings and pulling him at positive moment from the game, going 6 and only giving up 1 run. Then you stuck with Neely and Fisher to get the win. I believe Sully had intended to give Neely 2 innings and then let Fisher finish the 9th. But as Sully said Neely was still getting over the flu and it seemed like he had no energy coming out in the 8th. Fisher had his back and came in with 1 out and two runners on and neither of them scored. I will say I was surprised in the 8th when Purnell started stretching in the bullpen but quickly sat down when the Gators started scoring runs again. But man was that a well played game and well called by our coaches.
It seems Sully may have a new plan going forward. Give your starter 6 innings and your closer takes the 7th as long as you go out and run rule everyone. Game over, see ya. No need for any bullpen decisions today.
I want to give kudos to the home plate blue. He called a very consistent game. Maybe the best I have seen all season. Good job. Not often that an umpire gets credit for doing a good job on a fan forum. Now the fair/foul call that went to review makes me want to have chalk lines all the way down the line and not paint in the outfield. With chalk there would have been a kicking up of chalk if it was fair. It looked like a fair ball to me but one could argue that it might have been an angstrom outside the line.
Speaking of reviews there is no way to review the leaving first base early call yesterday unless there is a camera view that has both the baserunner and the right fielder in the same frame unless they have the technology to sync different views with multiple feeds. It was the home plate blue's call because the first base blue was well down the line to witness the catch and could not see the runner at first.
Great game, great crowd, great day. Cags excellen through six, our hitting what can be said - off the charts - and Neely pitched a terrific 7th but looked to be running on fumes in the 8th- understandable given his recent bout with flu- hey did what he could but Sully had to come get him. In comes Fisher with the Canes on the prowl, runers on second and third 9-4... Cyr up and he hits a frozen rope seems destined for left field and bring in two and make it 9-6... but Josh leaps stretching as high as possible snags it tosses to an alert Kurland covering --DP ends the threat and Gators' bats do the rest (including Josh HR) and we win the series.... Beautiful ending to a great day at the Park. Note: did not see Evans' throat slash as I was hi-fiving everyone around me but given the Canes' showboating during ths series and rivalry... not good but hey the emotion of the moment. Apparently he did not aim the slash at the Canes dugout but was part of Gators' celebration. A note on this umpiring crew: as this is a family chat, I will be diplomatic... they are not very good.
Did you see his U sign up over his head yesterday rounding second? A bit excessive for me. Btw Riopelle agreed and I believe BT let him Know at home plate. He’s a good young player for sure but surprised me what he did and how he did it rounding second.
Not after the U sign he threw up above his head after his hr yesterday. Gator players were pretty upset. Being at game it’s the most upset I’ve seen our kids in a while.
Yep. Surprised a freshman flaunting like he did coming around second. He provided all the motivation out guys needed for today. Our focus from the start was really good. Very crisp early on.
