So, if we'd had 0 shutdowns, the economy would not have crashed? link? Jesus, would you look at this water damage!!!!
Fires are real and are caused by firefighters. We know this is the case, because wherever you see a fire, firefighters are present.
Just going to drop this here ... Deborah Birx’s “Silent Invasion”: a Guide to Destroying America From Within Dr. Fauci held court in the public eye on a daily basis, so frequently that many misconstrue his role as being in charge. However, it was really Dr. Birx who articulated Task Force policy. All the advice from the Task Force to the states came from Dr. Birx. All written recommendations about their on-the-ground policies were from Dr. Birx. Dr. Birx conducted almost all the visits to states on behalf of the Task Force.
There would have been damage, with certain industries getting hit hard by crushed demand, but I don’t think we would have had the excuse to flood the economy with the equivalent of $11T in liquidity in an 18 month period to cause all of the long term damage that they did. At least the price of that Cozy Coupe in your picture wouldn’t have inflated by the amount that it has and that house could be repaired in a few months rather a year to a year and a half. I would think you would agree with me that government intervention into the economy should always be extremely limited?
so, no links? As of 9/20, 74% of economists believed that the economy would have been better off with more aggressive shutdowns. the survey was of real economists done by the free mkt lovers at the U. of Chicago. Experts Think The Economy Would Be Stronger If COVID-19 Lockdowns Had Been More Aggressive Out of those surveyed, 74 percent of economists said the U.S. would be in a better economic position now if lockdowns had been more aggressive at the beginning of the crisis. Among that camp, the most commonly cited reason was that early control over the virus would have allowed a smoother and more comprehensive return to economic activity later on. “More aggressive lockdowns would have [gotten] the country in a better position (health wise) as we head into fall and winter,” said Andrew Patton, a professor of economics and finance at Duke University. “It would also have signaled more clearly to the whole country that we need to take the virus seriously, and work together to get it under control,” Patton said. He paraphrased a quote from Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health, in a recent New York Times piece: “There’s no peeing section in the pool,” meaning you can’t just have some areas locked down while others see looser restrictions — and greater viral spread. Proponents of tighter lockdowns pointed to Japan and various European countries (such as Germany, Norway and Denmark) as examples of how reducing the virus to extremely low levels early on allowed for a quicker recovery. Others noted that children could have returned to school for in-person learning faster with earlier control over the virus — a major consideration in maximizing the country’s economic power as it bounces back from the pandemic. An economic study in AUS estimates that the shutdown cost 90b & that not shutting down would've cost over 1T. I don't know the ans, but it is silly to blame the cure without some serious analysis vs. your gut.
We’re any of these economists related to the health experts claiming early in that there would be 20M deaths from COVID? You seem to like to go out to find good food and beverages, how drastically would you have changed your habits if the decisions to close or stay open would have stayed in the hands of the people? I know I would have still gone out as much as before.
Perhaps the economists were right. Perhaps we could have hidden better from rogue aerosolized submicroscopic particles. Remember the Reagan quip about a shovel and a shallow hole ? It could have worked.
I tend to agree. It was at that moment that Trump proved once and for all he was still very much part of “the swamp.” (not our Swamp obviously)
More intellectual dishonesty… it was 20M deaths IF WE DID NOTHING. Do you you see the problem here? First you are complaining about how aggressive the lockdowns were, then you pivot right into a strawman fallacy using the prediction that didn’t happen because we had lockdowns, mask mandates, etc….
I believe that must have been the global number? The model conservatives mocked early on I believe modeled like 2 million U.S. deaths. I don’t remember anything predicting 20 million U.S. deaths, I do remember the 2 million. The U.S. ended up over 1 million, which pretty well redeemed those early models as not so crazy afterall (at least at a rudimentary level). Although to be fair, I think that same model went from that 2 million prediction down to like 60k with the early mitigation, then back up again into 6 and 7 figures when later waves hit. It wasn’t exactly the most useful thing, might have even given some false complacency when its number swung down so wildly. It obviously failed to predict human behavior as well as different variants (which would be practically impossible to account for, unless you could model exactly when a vaccine would come out or how the virus itself would mutate… not likely).
You are right, it was 2.2 million deaths if we did nothing, Not 20 million, I made the mistake of quoting @AgingGator without verifying….
The reason my lawn is not ravaged by unicorns is because I applied unicorn repellent last month. I used the repellent for the arctic unicorn variant.
I see no need, Tamiflu works very well, I’m not in a high risk group and I haven’t had the Flu since 1976. Went through H1N1 seeing 50 people a week and didn’t so much have a sniffle. Raised 3 kids though elementary and middle school and never got it. My immune system is very good from being a respiratory therapist and then a PA for a combined 35 years. When I get older and my risk profile changes I may change my tune. I don’t think you need every vaccine available just because it’s there. Doesn’t make me anti-vax
Trouble there is they make one large assumption, that heavier shutdowns would have stop the virus from spreading. Look to China they had huge shutdowns and it did almost nothing to stop the spread and reoccurrence of spikes and further shutdowns. Only now they have said screw it and stopped the no covid policy. 3 years of rolling shutdowns. Certainly you called point to a less effective vaccine being part of that but there still would have been variants from other countries cropping up regardless of vaccine use and efficacy. Just impossible to vaccine the world fast enough to stomp of variants.
No dark globalist conspiracy. Just immense and virulent stupidity and callousness ... Yet another leak reveals that Covid policies owe less to creepy conspiratorial globalists, than they do to the unbounded stupidity of our leaders, boring institutional dynamics and feedback effects
