I remember those two like it was yesterday! I had a major crush on Maria Anz. Still can't believe she left to be in one of the worst movies of all time . I was in the GGG back then...does that still exist? I remember going to the NCAA championships in the O'Dome in '86.
Bubble Watch: March 1 Happy March! Did you realize there were only three weeks left of the regular season, including conference championships? That’s right, and it’s time to start thinking about regionals qualification. As a reminder, postseason qualification is based on NQS, which is calculated by taking a team’s top six scores of the season, at least three of which must be on the road, dropping the highest score overall, and averaging the remaining five. Each year in this series we take a look at each “bubble” team’s highest possible NQS after this coming weekend and discuss what they’ll need to do to finish in the top 36 and make regionals. This week we’ll stick only to team discussion, adding in potential individual qualifiers next week. Let’s start with a regionals projection based on current standings, attempting to take geography into account. Norman Denver 1. Oklahoma 2. Michigan 8. Alabama 7. California 9. Auburn 10. Denver 16. Some interesting lineups tonight. Jenny pretty much wrote this meet off (as far as trying to win) in order to rest some of our gymnasts. Hopefully it will pay off in the end.
Don’t get the just show up and lose mentality. Have really been looking forward to this meet. Might as well have not scheduled it.
i think if in gainesville it would have been different.on the road, hostile crowd, judges who might be influenced
I made up my mind to watch while ignoring the scoring. First time I have seen Oklahoma this year. We are going to have to be superb to beat them. I hate to say it, but their program looked superior to ours. The announcer talked about their "shapes" in their floor routines. Wow. They were gorgeous. Our team looks clunky in their routines by comparison. This is the first time I have watched a meet and thought, "At our best, we might not be able to beat these gymnasts." We have LOTS of talent and in an evenly officiated meet we have a chance, but (TO THIS UNTRAINED, but experienced eye) Oklahoma just looks gorgeous.
Oklahoma is known for their clean and elegant-styled routines and recruit gymnasts who fit that type of gymnastics. Florida's current roster is more athletic and their routines are a little bigger and riskier than Oklahoma's. Or at least they've recruited more athletic-type of gymnasts recently. Also Oklahoma had their A+ Line-up against the Gators. They did not choose to rest any of their top gymnasts. We used 4-5 gymnasts who aren't starters. That is why Oklahoma looked more "polished" and "eloquent" last night. Jenny felt some of our top gymnasts needed to sit out a routine or two. We had only 1 AA-Wong- when we normally have 3-4 AA's (Thomas, DiCello, and sometimes Peyton or Sloane). Wong sat out FX lst week. Florida's UB line-up was it's only one that used it's A+ line-up. The other 3 routines weren't at full strength. Our FX line-up had 3 subs (1 gymnast was performing her 1st routine of the season, and 2 others were performing their 2nd FX routine of the season). One of the subs was a last minute replacement for Nguyan after her injury. On BB, DiCello and Trinity, who hadn't scored below a 9.925 since a while ago, were very uncharacteristically wobbly. Wong's BB routine was flawless until her landing. Our big bright spot was VT. We had a season high that has potential to be much higher. The very unfortunate mishap from Victoria-her 1st VT attempt this season, meant we did not have a chance to drop a score. But we now potentially have six 10.000 start values . And we still set a season high on VT even after Trinity's lowest VT score this season. I think our chances of winning NCAA title are very good. Out of the top 4-5 teams, Florida is the most consistent and we still have not peaked. Last night Oklahoma showed they are human-they were using their A+ line-ups against us. Gator Nation should be feeling more optimistic and hopeful after last night's VT performance. If our VT continues to improve next week and at SECs, and our FX gets back on track (we still have the highest FX score in NCAAs in '23 and our highest UB score-49.800- is the highest so far in '23 (ahead of Oklahoma's 49.675), then our chances to win NCAA will be just as good as Michigan, Oklahoma and Utah.
Of course. I know what Jenny was attempting. But, I have watched all year and Oklahoma was, as I said, gorgeous. I also said that with fair judging and our best effort, we have a chance... That doesn't take away from how beautiful they looked.
I get the idea of resting some of your regulars, but what I don't get is resting two of your three best on the floor, or any other apparatus, when you can only drop your worst score of six.
Boring and not worth the time to watch after the first 2 rounds. Relaxing and resting on floor sent a bad signal to the team. I don't know how many times I have to say please leave Leah Clapper to what she does best, the beam. It showed up in lower scores on the beam as well. I'm not a fan of holding out. I want this team to crack 198 every time they perform. Unfortunately, Jenny Rowland does not listen to me. We're good for second place again until we toughen up and perform all out the way OU performs. I don't want that. This team is good enough to and should win the national championship. Push them harder Jenny. Looks like Savannah Schoenherr is out of her walking boot. I wonder if she is planning to get back into performance mode for the team? She could for sure help out on two events.
I just watched the meet on replay. Both teams look tired. Trinity especially so. Jenny has not had opportunity to rest Trinity before because team was making push to win the SEC and then was senior night. Trinity alone made a .4 difference in score due to miscues on vault and beam and not doing FX. DiCello also looked tired. Nguyen almost injured herself on her vault and missed two events she usually scores well in. Oklahoma does not have to make SEC push facing so many top teams. They pace their schedule and know they can win every meet. Florida is one missing vault away. Bars will be fine. FX will be great. Beam is consistent. Tthis sport is one where you can peak too soon. We did that last year. KJ Kindler knows how to instill a killer instinct into her team. Jenny does seem to focus on the positive approach. But we are right there. I love watching this team regardless. The quality of the routines and how they balance beauty grace and power has never been better.
