Lingering nutrition from runoff from Ivan is fueling a red tide bloom that never quite diminished this winter as the water warms up. Right now, it seems to just be a battle to see if the bloom runs out of nutrition before the ocean runs out of fish. Seeing 40" plus snook and 30 lb goliath grouper floating belly up is saddening. thousands of dead mullet that weren't smart enough to push up into the freshwater rivers. Red tide is naturally occurring and would come in brief surges in the past. For the last 5 - 10 years, the duration and the size of the blooms have amplified. We still can't catch and keep a snook or redfish from the 2018 kill. The beaches are a mess, feel sorry for the tourists, feel worse for the fish. No idea how this level of repeated exposure will impact people.

Fixing the Nutrient run-off from AG (sugar, row crop, cattle) Ian and septic systems is not an easy task. Would take buy-in from industry and municipal and state governments. And money. Lots of money.
Better for DeSantis to use his time railing against the (non-existent) Zombie Studies major at a 700 student college. In fairness, Ron is following the well-trod path created by previous governors.

Perhaps if there is a Drag Queen Story Hour at the beach then they will start to care

Stuff like this definitely wont help:

Estimated 630,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the Hillsborough River, records show

There's nothing to do but joke, there isnt anyone in the Florida government that's going to reign in the things that make red tide worse than it needs to be when disasters happen

we just had a $9B ? state surplus. that's lots of money. how much money is it going to cost not to fix it?

why shouldn't the nutrient generators pay for the nutrient removal? that will raise the price of milk and the price of beef. I am perfectly fine with eliminating the sugar subsidy and letting that industry go bankrupt. whatever takes over that land should have to remove its own nutrients prior to discharge like every other type of permitted development besides ag.

It's not funny. You care about drag queens, furries, what a person decides to call themselves and Reedy Creek. Meanwhile there are hardworking families living in hotels with children that are defined as homeless, people can't afford homeowners insurance or rent and fish are dying.

But let's fly to Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada to give speeches.

Ron is following the lead of all the governors before him.

I have a contract to sell my condo on the beach. Closing April 17th. I’m tired of red tide, storm surge, and flood insurance.
We are moving inland to a home that’s not in a flood zone and far enough away from the coast I won’t have to smell the dead fish.

I remember red tide when I was growing up in the 50s, why didn't Leroy Collins fix the problem?
