I was looking at the last 15 national title teams- going back to our titles in 2006… and they all had genius level or really effective OC’s and none of them had a head coach calling plays unless it was a genius. Florida - mullen Lsu - Jimbo Clemson- Morris Bama- Kiffen/sark LSU- Brady Ohio state - Day Georgia - monken I cannot find an outlier. I agree with how CBN is building the program. Recruiting, facilities, building the line of scrimmage, accountability and detail and work ethic. We can argue all day about how much the portal and NIL may have thrown a wrench in his blueprint or whether he will recover or if UAA is on board with any of that… CBN is obviously gearing everything towards Jimmys and joes over X’s and O’s and clearly that’s how title teams and dynasties are built but each one of these programs had a really really good tactician, game planner and play caller. CBN would be the outlier and he’s not a genius level play caller. I just don’t see CBN being the outlier for titles without a really good OC. I’m afraid his work ethic is going to be undone by getting outcoached. I think we are all in the dark about the roles O’Hara and the Oline coaches play in game planning or play calling but whatever the actual scenario is- we don’t have a great game day play caller. I think with the TE coach leaving, there is room to bring someone in. A guy who can run CBN’s pistol, okay action, system but that knows when to call what on Saturdays. Just my two cents. I feel like we will come back to this in a year or two with Muschampesque vibes. And lemme be clear/ I’m PRO CBN…. I just think this is a glaring oversight
Lots of talent as well. Especially LOS. Sometimes that talent makes them look good as well. Lot of those guys went on to HC positions and haven't done much save Jimbo. I'd like to see concentration on depth and talent before I worry about OC. But I get what you are saying. I'd prefer BN have an OC also, just not at the top of my concerns list.
I get it man. I think I've just been in the acceptance phase for awhile. I enjoyed living in Gainesville during the Meyer and Donovan run. Not many fan bases got to experience that.
Overall, yes, you need a good OC. But once you start to skin the cat and look at the history of these OC's and their coaching styles, they are not all the same. You basically have two types: a mad scientist or a regular guy with mojo. Mullen, Morris, Kiffin, and Day are probably the mad scientist types who were pretty innovative for their times and on the forefront of offensive thinking. It would definitely appear we don't have any coaches like that. Jimbo, Sark, Brady, and Monken weren't exactly hot rod innovators; they were just solid offensive coaches with a good feel for the game who could make the right calls at the right times and just maximize the talent they had. It's possible we could succeed going this route but don't have the talent yet.
Urban had superior talent that no one could stop. Everyone knew what Mullen was calling(remember the spinning wheel?), he was not an OC genius.
I don't know if Brady is/was a genius but Coach O bringing him in was the 'genius move' of O's tenure at LSU. Brady brought his NFL rpo's to that team, which fit Burrow perfectly. The rest was history.
Brady is not without talent but I think hindsight is showing Burrow, Chase, and Jefferson are the most transcendent 1-2-3 punch of offensive skill players any team has ever had.
Burrow who is doing very well in the nfl. I could look genius as an oc with Burrow throwing to the receivers he had in college. Brady hasn’t looked very genius since then.
Those players are Top 5 in their positions in the NFL. LSU had a great defense too in 2019. That run was the result of LSU paying outta the A to recruit and sign the best players in the country
I never said Brady was a genius, nor did i say O was a genius, however O ( who IMO comes across as a borderline knuckle walker) knocked it out of the park bringing in the perfect guy with a system for Burrow (that one year).
I think you're misreading the correlation. These teams all had great offenses, which has (at least temporarily) convinced you that the OCs must be geniuses. On that list I'd say Mullen, Morris and Kiffen are the only ones that have consistently shown they understand offense. Sometimes you hit lightning in a bottle and your offense explodes in a way that's almost hard to screw up. I think Day and Brady and Monken are good examples of that. Jimbo, too, who has struggled to recreate what he had with the title team.
There are more than likely a ton of ox’s that could have had overwhelming results with that group. My response wasn’t so much to you but the list of geniuses running those offenses. I don’t believe many of them are all that great. They can win with talent like they should is all they are. Jimbo a genius? Really? Monken? They are good and can do their job but there’s nothing transcendent about many of them.
But I still standby that each of these teams had an OC who was intentional and dedicated. Napier would be the outlier. And there seems to be this idea that “well, Georgia was all talent or LSU had Burrow or Florida 08 had ridiculous talent” - ok… but there was still GREAT playcalling in game and also, currently we are not getting that level of talent to offset not having a GREAT dedicated OC
Yep, am ALL IN, too, on Billy Napier. However......he HAS to get an OC/QBC a LOT sooner than later. Two reasons, (1)allows him to focus on CEO duties (2)that OC/QBC will know offensive football far, far better than Napier.
Talent trumps coaching, especially at the coordinator level...all of these teams were absolutely loaded with talent.
If that were true then they'd have continued and relatively stable success. Some did, not many on that list, though. Some of them just hit lightning in a bottle.
Thought it was the Dazzler (Addazio) that had the play calling spinning wheel? Dive play left, dive play right, dive play center then long incomplete pass.
