The 14-14 (7-8) Gators travel to America's weirdest Memorial Gymnasium to take on the 15-13 (8-7) Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday, Feb 25 at 6:00pm. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2. This, in my mind, is a tipping point game. Given the recent losses and esp. the one at home against Vandy, Gator fans are anxious for something positive. Just looking at the records, this is a game that the Gators really don't want to lose. There's also the prospect of an NIT bid at stake. Pick the score, the MVG, and the SoG, which will be Niels Lane pts. Lane is averaging 2.1 pts/game. Can the Gators get an offensive boost from NL? The bigger question might be "can CTG get Lane involved on the defensive end to better defend the perimeter than the $hithow that happened in Gainesville a couple weeks ago?" My pick: Gators 74 Commodores 71 Mvg Kugel SoG: 8
The regular season has lost a little bit of its luster now that we can't "bubble watch". However, I do plan to emerge victorious in the Hallgator pick-em contest, so I have a little work to do. I'll start with this game. UF: 80 Vandy: 70 MVG: Kugel SOG: 4 I'm looking at these last couple of games as practice and scouting opportunities. Win or lose, they will help us sweep through the SEC tournament and into the NCAA tournament.
The Vandy gym is totally wacko. I went to a game there right before the Covid lock-down. When you look for player stats they give fouls first and then points. On the scoreboard it is Vandy to the left and the visiting team to the right which is the total opposite of all gyms I have ever been in. It is bizzaro world for basketball. I don't want to predict a score but I will predict that it will be bizzarre. Hopefully in our favor. And with CC out it is a no brainer that Kugel is MVP. He is a star in the making.
