That article said that WKU's QB Reed entered the transfer portal and wanted to play for UF, but he wasn't offered. I don't remember hearing about that... Is that true?
Well, of course. Wouldn't you? Think about it. Easily the worst part of coaching football period and one that is taking up more and more of your "coaching" duties. It's not even coaching, just lame sales, and to a target audience that gets more and more entitled and fickle every year. If there were more jobs available, you'd probably see a flood of guys going from college to pro.
Maybe, UF has made it easy for him to do that for the better part of the last 10+ years though. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Jay Bateman coaches the inside backers. Mike Peterson coaches the outside backers. Austin Armstrong has primarily been a LB coach. Is another exit looming just waiting on him to find a landing spot?
It is a valid concern but if Napier is not willing to work with them then the "best" candidates are nothing of the sort. Personally I'm not sure if Napier really is that much of a control freak. Maybe given the state of the entire program he sees this as being essential now, but something he might change in the future. Only time will tell, but right now it sure seems like he values personal history highly.
My uninformed guess or what I would do is have him just concentrate on being DC with Spencer. Have Raymond handle that back end. Keep the other guys as is. Recruiting has improved at LB.
I can see Bateman leaving because he is pissed. Has far more experience as a DC than Armstrong, about 10 yrs worth. on the other hand, nothing needs to change. Let Armstrong focus on the overall defense and let the position coaches do their jobs. Fold safeties into Corey Raymond's job, he has plenty of history as a defensive backs coach.
Possibly doesn't want to shake up the scheme so close to Spring Practice? This guy is familiar with the scheme and how things operate. Certainly positives and negatives in his choice to go this route.
So if we hired a guy that proved himself as a DC at a school like umm, USM, and we came in and snatched him up....then you would like the hire?
Napier offered him an analyst job before Clemson. He turned it down. Said preferred to take a year off. Then was offered same job by Dabo and took it. (He is an alum so that does into it)
Oh stop your incessant bitching. You'd be whining if Napier didn't replace Toney, and now that he is, you're whining because of who he chose to replace him. Wahhhhh wahhhh wahhhh. Try something different
Posted in the other thread, I never actually saw Scott accept a Clemson position.....only "reports" that it may happen
Fair points but why are the "best available" even available? It makes sense to move up to Florida . . . less sense to move laterally unless it's for a big raise or things weren't working out at the last place. Also, experienced coordinators come in an have a good year and the odds of them leaving right after that year are greater so coaching turnover would be greater, it seems; schemes would be changing more frequently, recruiting relationships would take hits, etc.
Um was the move from MSU to the Gators considered a "lateral move" in your opinion? Lol.. kidding, ET. I said that because when we got Mullen the clowns over on MSU sites called his move to Florida a "lateral move."
I understand Dabo is trying to make that happen . . . but what if Coach Scott could coach TEs or WRs and help coordinate the offense ? Hmmmmm. Update: Nope. They never sold their home in South Carolina so we were paddling upstream.
Some have asked about Jeff Scott and if he did officially take a analyst position on the Clemson staff. He is not listed in their directory, fwiw. Clemson Tigers Official Athletics Site This and several other similar reports came out last month, but did not make it official. Clemson football: Jeff Scott returns to Clemson I did read another report (don’t have a link) that said he was now going to take a year off. If his USF exit $$$ had a future earnings offset clause in it, fully understand, take $$$ and spend a year with your family and recharge.
