interesting read on the cyber war being fought by volunteer groups on the behalf of Ukraine I helped create a 'cyber army' to help Ukraine defeat Russia. We can't fight with guns, but we can fight with our laptops. (msn.com) On February 24 last year I woke up to the sounds of explosions and bombs in Kyiv. I went to the underground car park of my building and put a call out on Facebook asking for volunteers to be a part of a cyber army to help protect our country. Within two hours we had more than 200 applications. People said, "we can't fight with a gun but we can fight with our laptops." By the next day we had more than 1,000 applications, mostly from people in the Ukrainian cybersecurity community. I asked if they had any qualifications and what their skills were. I checked with someone from the Ukrainian cybersecurity community because I didn't want Russian agents infiltrating. We started creating projects that we could help with and delivered them to the Ministry of Defense and National Security and Defense Council, along with information to help our government in an unofficial capacity. ....................................................... Within the first few days of the war, we separated the cyber army into groups of between 7 to 10 people. I didn't want anyone in the group to know the identities of the others in case of a data leak. Our call for decentralized cyber army volunteers is probably what inspired others to create their own groups, such as Ukraine's IT army, formed a few days later by the minister of digitization, Mykhailo Fedorov.
I agree, but I would prefer to see those balls translated into more concrete economic and military support over and above diplomatic and informational support, which is more or less maxed out.
Agreed but we’ve spent $40B and have committed $92B. I saw an interesting story on munitions manufacturing in the US. Seems it’s not super scalable and we have to be able to fight on multiple fronts. We need to invest more in that even though I think 800B a year in defense spending is excessive.
“Weapons on the battlefield are continuously supplied by the United States, not China. US has no right to give orders and orders to China, and we will also never accept instructions and even threats and pressure from the US regarding Russian-Chinese relations.” -Chinese FM
Ukraine’s army has been destroyed twice over, Zelensky is screaming for a third but the US and EU are close to being tapped out.
UK has agreed to provide long range missiles Putin’s Nightmare Comes True: Ukraine Is Getting Long-Range Missiles (msn.com) Why the UK Just Promised Long-Range Missiles to Ukraine - Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany on February 18, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised that the United Kingdom would be the first country to provide long-range missile systems to Ukraine. The announcement could prove to be a pivotal moment in the war, with Sunak going above and beyond even what former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson did while in office and promising to deliver weapons that U.S. President Joe Biden has remained hesitant to provide. “Together we’re delivering as much equipment in the next few months as in the whole of 2022. And together we must help Ukraine to shield its cities from Russian bombs and Iranian drones,” Sunak said. “And that’s why the UK will be the first country to provide Ukraine with longer-range weapons. And it’s why we’re working with our allies to give Ukraine the most advanced air defense systems and build the air force they need to defend their nation.”
I read the piece and there's very little detail. I would be curious to know about the end-use license or other software limitations that prevent them from being used to strike Russian territory.
