He did a year and 6 months in prison for something that will possibly be fully legal across the country pretty soon. You think he should have been in jail longer? Arent you a gun rights guy?
It's possible. I think some folks who are mentally ill try to "self medicate" with religion in the way that others may self medicate with alcohol or drugs. Doesn't mean it's the fault of the religion in those cases but it may be what some desperate people reach for, especially if they grew up in a religious household.
Would this be a normal sentence for a non violent gun charge (particularly in a red state) assuming he had a clean record? I have no idea but seems like it would have been reported by now if he had a prior record. I know of a couple people that had guns where they weren't supposed to have them and said they forgot and basically got a warning. Not sure what it typical.
I doubt there is any consistency, and I'm guessing racial and class disparities are a big factor too. If you are a "Constitutional Carry" person seems like a year and a half would be an egregious injustice. I'm for MJ legalization, and if someone did a year and half for carrying around a normal amount of weed, I'd think that was excessive and unjust.
The felony weapons charge, based upon the article, is an add-on charge to something else. You don't get pulled over for having a loaded weapon in a vehicle. The loaded weapon is discovered during a search (requiring consent or PC) or because it is in plain sight. He pled to only the add-on charge. I doubt that was the *actual* reason he got arrested. Could be, but the fact that the prosecutor wasn't generally prosecuting the weapons charge leads me to believe it is unlikely. But yes, in general I don't have a problem with law abiding people having a loaded weapon in their vehicle. I also don't have a problem with open carry. Doesn't mean I'll walk around Florida openly carrying.
They said on news that he wasn’t a felon at time of gun charge. I haven’t seen anyone cover what the offense fact base was before it was pled down. So the time could be normal. Not enough info yet.
You can get pulled over for a routine traffic infraction and catch a weapons charge if the cops want to search you or the vehicle, seems that was the only thing he did time for in Michigan

You are wrong, there was a write up about it on CNN. He was sitting near an abandoned building in a high crime area and a cop stopped him to ask questions, including “do you have a weapon on you”. He was dumb enough to be honest and say “yes”. He could have just kept his mouth shut and said “I’m not answering any questions, am I free to go?”, but didn’t. The cop patted him down, found the gun, arrested him. He owned it legally but didn’t have a permit. Plead down the charge and got 18 Months probation, and was not allowed to own a gun while on probation… it was 2019 so I assume that has passed. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who has two sons currently attending Michigan State who were both on campus at the time, made a poignant comment, "We have to start loving our kids more than we love our guns." .
When nothing was done after Sandy Hook I quit even thinking about serious gun reform. Just gonna hug my kids a little extra tight every morning
Maybe not sailed forever. The current interpretation of the Second Amendment is a relatively recent phenomena. When I was attending UF law, things were far different, it was viewed as more of a collective right than an individual one. But, recently our SCOTUS seems to love ancient British Law, and our amendment was reinterpreted with some reliance on England's Bill of Rights of 1689, ignoring the parts that were "inconvenient." As we learned with Roe, things can change drastically based of the make-up of the Court.
This is where the usual defenders tell everyone we are just falling for emotional reporting. These things happen. Gonna make an omelet you gotta crack a few eggs. So some kids died. If your home ever gets broken into you gotta be ready to blast them.
Scary if this post is serious. I’m sorry that your hobby isn’t seen as important as human lives by the rational folks. A handgun and shotgun are more than enough to defend your family. Enough with the unnecessary deaths caused by the wing nut gun culture in this country.
