DeSantis, hypocrite on guns. Wanted Tampa to ban guns at his event, but wanted Tampa to take the blame.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/02/10/desantis-campaign-emails-gun-free-event/

As Gov. Ron DeSantis prepared for an election night party in downtown Tampa last year, city officials received a surprising — and politically sensitive — request.

The Republican governor’s campaign wanted weapons banned from his victory celebration at the city-run Tampa Convention Center, a city official said in emails obtained by The Washington Post. And the campaign suggested that the city take responsibility for the firearms ban, the official said — not the governor, who has been a vocal supporter of gun rights.

“DeSantis/his campaign will not tell their attendees they are not permitted to carry because of the political optics,” Chase Finch, the convention center’s safety and security manager, said in an Oct. 28 email to other city officials about the request, which was conveyed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), a state police agency led by a DeSantis appointee.

Well that’s true but the DuhSantis campaign said they were just following the FDLE guidelines to protect the Governor from getting shot. Not a bad idea. It would be great if they cared as much about the lives of school children as they do politicians. However the open carry advocates were ticked about them not allowing guns, and say the new legislation to allow everyone to conceal carry doesn’t go far enough.

Oh I don’t know, how about keeping guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them in the first place for one, and make them more inaccessible in the home so children can’t get to them for another.

    So
    Platitudes
Bad guys shouldn’t have guns is something EVERYONE agrees on. Bad guys don’t care what LAWS you put in place. They are bad guys.
Now I will agree Guns should be secured around children. What that means will differ for different families. It’s not a one size fits all…unless you just want to do away with all guns..

As confusion lingers over what parts of Black history will be off limits and what parts accepted in Florida classrooms, the Florida Department of Education this week clarified that the topic of reparations — offering financial restitution to the descendants of enslaved people — will not be banned.

“We are not banning the word ‘reparation,’ ’’ said Alex Lanfranconi, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Education in response to an article published by the Herald/Times.

He said the discussion about banning the discussion of reparations came about as part of the department’s objections to the Advanced Placement African-American Studies course, in which the agency listed several reasons for rejecting the course that was being offered in 12 Florida schools.

The department announced last month that it objected to the topic related to the reparations movement because “all points and resources in this study advocate for reparations. There is no critical perspective or balancing opinion in this lesson.”

But, practically speaking, the Stop WOKE Act makes it very difficult to talk about reparations without risking being fired or sued, including discussion of William Sherman's Special Field Orders No. 15 (40 acres and a mule).

Dear Leader will only focus on culture war issues and continually creates solutions in search of problems. Can't wait to see him have to deal with real media on the POTUS campaign trial since he won't be able to hand pick who can ask him questions. He will most certainly melt down.

Sorry if this was already mentioned. Someone asked me about it the other day, but I haven't read the case. I'm sure there are one or more people on here who have some experience in Florida public records law and executive privilege arguments. This author claims that executive privilege is nowhere to be found in the Florida Constitution or its statutes. Is that true?

    ****

    https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/editorials/article271924982.html

But now we have a ruling in a lawsuit, John Doe v. Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Executive Office of the Governor, that runs counter to all of those well-defined concepts of government-by-the-people. As the Miami Herald reported, an anonymous person filed suit last year asking for documents showing any communication between the governor’s office and “six or seven pretty big legal conservative heavyweights” that DeSantis revealed on a podcast that he’d consulted when making judicial picks for the Florida Supreme Court.

DeSantis’ legal team (which we are no doubt paying for) argued in court that he shouldn’t have to hand over the documents because such things should be kept secret. The governor needs to be able to talk to anyone and everyone in private if it helps him make good decisions for the rest of us, or so the argument went.

    ****

But the fact remains: No such thing was ever agreed on by voters in this state. Executive privilege is not in the state Constitution or statutes; DeSantis’ lawyers just want it to be so. They want it so badly they’ve tried it in other cases.

Alright, I found the Opinion. Much of it is procedural and the finding of executive privilege, specifically, seems to be based in part on Section 2.01, Fla. Stat. which adopts the common law of England, and also on separation of powers arguments.

I am aware of that provision, having used it on occasion in real estate matters, where many provisions of the law were established long before the Republic. I would have never imagined someone could make the argument that we adopted the scope of Executive Power from a monarchy, even a quasi Constitutional (at the time) monarchy

I’m no DeSantis fan, but executive privilege isn’t spelled out in the situation either, yet the president has it. Why would this be different?
