Counter point: he was HS running QB that Mac identified and brought on board and really flowered once Trask started which was a decision taken out of Mullen’s hands.
Yep, I loved the broken ankles he gave the FSU defense in the swamp on that one play where it looked like he was tackled for a loss. Never get tired of that.
Toney is the type of player who only helps when he is on a good team like the Chiefs. A player like him doesn't do things in every game. The Chiefs are good enough that they can win games if he doesn't do anything. But when he does do something it's like 50-75 free yards you weren't counting on and in a heavyweight game like this, it makes a huge difference. But for a bad team like the Giants there is no getting around he is not the type of player they needed. He was the #20 pick. You don't use that kind of pick on a punt returner. Most of the players picked after him are much more significant contributors on an every play basis. #23 pick Christian Darrisaw is already one of the best left tackles in the NFL. There's a reason the guy who picked him got put out to pasture and the Giants were one of the biggest reclamation projects in the NFL.
Yup. Chiefs were the perfect landing spot for Toney. Gives them the creative player that can get YAC and an added x factor to an already difficult to defend offense. He's basically a bonus player for that offense.
I think the other thing that has to be mentioned, besides what he may have thought of himself by being selected so high (and he came down to earth, like Fournette did with the Bucs) is what the Giants were selecting him to be. As dynamic as he is, he isn't built for heavy duty work. More of a "gotcha" piece. And so he got injured. Definitely has a job in KC if he wants one. Just needs to embrace it, 1st rounder or not.
I see all this. True. But I think it speaks more to Andy Reid’s genius and the boring, staid, good ol boy network of the NFL. Reid PROVES you can use speed, creativity and college concepts and most of these other coaches are scared retreads who wanna win games 23-20 with “good, sound, blue collar, fundamental football”.
Mac had many flaws, and was not a great recruiter on paper. He was able to identify (low rated) talent and filled many holes which led to Mullen's success.
What Hill was in KC with speed Toney is now in quickness and elusiveness. He is the wide receiver version of the great Barry Sanders in elusiveness (and I dont put many people even close to Barry). Guy is a ghost when you try and tackle him.
And something extremely upsetting. The way the Chiefs played the last 5:15 of that game was nothing short of Brillant. The fact that the running back took a knee and didn't score making the Eagles use their time outs and bleed the clock was genius. I love the fact that they had control of the game and did not give the Eagles a chance back in it.
Only if it was returned. Would have likely been OT which was a gamble. But I would rather not give a Superbowl quality team the ball back with over a minute to go. I think they made the right call. Even if they had missed the FG.
He is just getting over a hammy, that's why he didn't play that much. Hammy are hard to get over... it takes time.
Toney was surrounded. Saw this pic, the video doesn't capture (it was so quick) how he got out of this mess and reversed field..
One of the KC receivers may be gone next year, i believe its Ju Ju.. KC took it really slow with Toney this year a) to not get him reinjured, and b) to see if he had 'it' to become one of the full time receivers. I think hearing what KC is saying about his work ethic, intelligence, and determination... KC will rely on Toney as a starter next year.
Just another example of a player that wasn't fully utilized, similar to what happened with Dameon Pierce.
