What’s your point? This reorganization has nothing to do with DeSantis. Streaming lost a bundle and I’m not sure if you’re aware of this but there was a pandemic that cost them a bunch as well.
Why doesn't anyone in the GOP in Tallahassee ever talk about The Villages? It is a privately owned special district. I guarantee you won't hear one peep from the GOP about dismantling it
Because it was established after the Florida Constitution from 1968 in 1980. Don’t worry. This is nothing but nonsensical hysteria. DeSantis appreciates every bit of this being kept in the news.
And I suppose the 1,000 + special districts spread throughout the State should be promptly abolished, and a law precluding any special district on this State. For those who loathe development, not a bad plan. For a tourist-based state like Florida, not a lot of forward-thinking there.
That is one solid paragraph of a non-answer. I understand the logic — even if I disagree— of the intellectually honest argument that there should be no special districts (like, for example what @Gatorrick22 wrote). That’s unequivocal, and effectively apolitical. But what is your argument found3d upon? It sounds like your argument is that Disney shouldn’t have a special district, but the others that exist and will exist are ok, because Disney spoke out against a law. That’s' at least in my opinion, is consistent with the fluid, retaliatory hypocrisy of the DeSantis regime.
So when can we expect private prisons to be outlawed? Charter schools taking taxpayer dollars? How about all the major water/sewer utilities and “common areas” set up in special districts by developers like Pulte/Lennar/Toll Bros and the like? If we are suddenly taking hard lines on privately held municipal services, those are also at issue. Of course in the real world, we know this isn’t about any of that and is instead 100% political retribution and pandering.
To all those who laughed at this post. When is the last time you’ve stepped foot in a govt school? I worked in them and have a child in one. My very good friend is a counselor at a govt high school. The schools are overrun by the loud trashy parents. Admin won’t stand up for discipline. It’s a cruel joke. And I’m down playing it if anything.
So a private business should be able to form a special district since we are now beyond 1980. All special districts established before 1980 should be removed. Got it. If that's the case, then why are we only talking about Disney?
Just saying the reason why the two are different. If Reddy Creek had refiled after the Florida Constitution in 1968…then it would not be an issue. Now they get to. And the more this stays in the news. The better for DeSantis.
Yea, the Parks are going gangbusters. That would be the only area that DeSantis could reasonably claim to have impacted. Mind you, I don't think that the Parks' recent performance has anything to do with communicating some opposition on this issue. I got many people even aware of it. But certainly he can take zero credit for Disney's financial concerns. Every big streaming service is facing it. Everyone overinvested in streaming. Disney is just trying to compensate with cost reductions throughout other areas.
But the RCID was set up in the 60s as Disney needed its own power plant. What was in Orlando at the time was woefully inadequate for Disney's construction needs. Since a corporation was not able to build its own power and sewage plants, they needed to create their own "municipality" for the purposes of power generation and sewage treatment.
All three of my boys when to a "government school" and discipline has been a problem for years and years. From one of my sons' teachers, the issue was the northern parents coming down and not wanting the government telling them how to raise their child. The same teacher told me that the school system was afraid those parents would sue. I witnessed a parent storming out of an open house because they announced school uniforms. Doesn't sound like a "liberal" issue to me, sounds like a cultural trend. FWIW I tried to get the Lake County School board to look at a program we experienced at our middle school in SC where the resource officer was a bootcamp officer and parents had the choice to put them in the bootcamp program or accept out of school suspension. There's more to the process than I am putting here, but they wouldn't even try to look into it. It created a better learning environment in the classrooms If by "liberal" you're talking about inclusivity, everyone has the option take their student out and put them in the private school of your choice, just not with my money ok?
This would be well and fine except in 1968 after the Florida Constitution was ratified, Disney's special district's legislation (House Bill no. 486, aka Reedy Creek Improvement Act) was taken to court and challenged as illegal, but the Florida Supreme Court said it did not violate any aspects of the new Florida Constitution. After decades of a precedent that said the legislation was totally legal by the leading court in the state, why is there now a problem? What changed to now make it illegal? Orange County even threatened to sue Reedy to get it abolished in 1986, but Disney agreed to pay $13M to improve roads outside of it's own property to placate the county. Orange County was upset that Disney actually kept up it's roads and as soon as you got outside of their property, the roads (maintained by Orange County) were crap and the county hated the image it created. Orange County and Reedy have had a great relationship since then. That is bipartisanship between two parties. That is give and take to make both entities work for the greater good.
Nothing has changed legally. The State of Florida is now run by leaders who want a culture war and want the state to stand for hatred of a disfavored minority as opposed to representing the citizens as a whole. They're willing to harm one of the greatest economic engines the state has had for growth in order to try to express their hatred.
I really like the idea you presented. Well done! Sad but government is slow and disinterested in change. I truly worry that we’re hurting our children by giving in the the wishes of the, likely uneducated parents.
And this time they are getting to work together again. This time with the state. And things will work out.
