Suspects for these attacks on 4 substations have been arrested. Give ‘em the electric chair your honor.

Two charged with attacks on four Pierce County power substations

Tacoma – Two Puyallup, Washington, men will appear in U.S. District Court in Tacoma today charged with conspiracy to damage energy facilities and possession of an unregistered firearm, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown. Matthew Greenwood, 32, and Jeremy Crahan, 40, were arrested Saturday, December 31, 2022, following a fast-moving investigation by the FBI. Prosecutors will ask that both men remain detained at the Federal Detention Center at SeaTac pending future hearings.

According to the criminal complaint filed with the court late Saturday, December 31, 2022, and unsealed today, the two men were identified as possible suspects through the analysis of cell phone records. At one of the substations, Tacoma Power captured images of one suspect and the image of a pick-up truck that appeared to be connected with the attack. A similar pick-up truck was connected to the defendants. When law enforcement served a search warrant on the home of the suspects, they recovered distinctive clothing pictured in the surveillance photos. Agents also seized two short-barreled firearms that had not been registered as required by law. One of the firearms was equipped with a make-shift silencer.

The suspects, Brandon Russell and Sarah Clendaniel, were taken into custody last week, officials said in a briefing on Monday.

Russell is a founder of a neo-Nazi group named Atomwaffen Division that works toward "ushering in the collapse of civilization," according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization that tracks U.S. hate groups.

That Florida guy was released from prison in 2021

Brandon Clint Russell, 22, of Tampa, Florida, was sentenced today to five years in federal prison for possessing an unregistered destructive device and for unlawful storage of explosive material. Russell pleaded guilty on Sept. 27, 2017.

Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez of the Middle District of Florida, Special Agent in Charge Eric W. Sporre of the FBI’s Tampa Division, and Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan made the announcement. The sentence was issued by Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Bucklew.

“Russell, an active and founding member of a neo-Nazi group, was sentenced today by a federal judge after he unlawfully possessed and stored dangerous explosive materials in his home,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Boente. “This case is but one example of the National Security Division’s resolve to identify, disrupt and prevent terrorist threats, whether domestic or international.”

Too bad Florida has a soft on crime governor who lets these thugs back onto the street to keep committing crimes.

I found this segment interesting, especially in light of the Fifth Circuit’s new opinion saying you can’t have your guns taken away due to a restraining order. From the main article, reprinted in today’s Times

Clendaniel’s desire to carry out an attack quickly was hampered by her lack of access to a rifle, according to the criminal complaint. Her semi-automatic weapon had been seized in a dispute with a neighbor, and she was hoping to get a new one from the informant. In the meantime, prosecutors say, she was planning to scope out the potential attack sites.

The only conclusion one can draw is the Firth Circuit wants terrorists to have easier access to guns.

This excerpt is dead on, and exposes the reasoning of so many that try to say what he is doing is no big deal. There is a even a legal doctrine on it - a chilling effect

This makes an interesting point. A person with ill-intent is going to find a way. Law won't let her have a gun? Go around the law.

That said, if found guilty, what kind of prison term does domestic terrorism, or conspiracy to commit domestic terrorism carry?

It seemed to me the point was because the law prevented this woman from obtaining weapons legally, she had to go the illegal route and that is what foiled the whole plan. The law worked as intended to protect society from crazy idiots.

If the person she had tried to obtain it from wasn't an informant, it might have worked. Criminal gonna criminal.
