Neely threw two solid innings and then got beat up in his third giving up 4 runs. He just doesn't look the same as last year. There are glimpses but there are also some ugly innings.

Nothing on Abner tonight but plenty on Nesbitt. He came out in the 8th and had the easiest inning of the night. Struck the first two on 4 pitches each, both hitters caught looking on pitches that they froze on. And then an easy ground ball to end the inning. I was ready to deem him Closer Man! Then he came back out to finish the 9th in a scrimmage that was already decided and gave up 3 runs. MEH

Looking back over my game notes...
Rivera with two singles 3 RBIs
Cags with 2 singles against the shift all night long, 2 RBIs
    Riopelle 1 for 4 with a HR 2 RBIs
Langford 1-3 with a HR. Sorry Mr. Langford.
    Evans 1-3 with a double. 1 HBP
    Alvarez 2 singles goes 2-3
Lastres did make a nice play behind the plate. Runner at first is stealing, ball in the dirt but bounces in front of the plate. In one motion he pops up grabs the ball and with his momentum going towards second fires a bullet to get the runner. Talbott was the runner and seemed to have a decent jump. Fabian was covering from SS.
All three catchers had balls get away that resulted in a runner advancing.

Starting to wrap my head around what Sully might be considering as with a batting order...

    Robertson/Halter L
    Langford R
    Caglianone L
    Rivera R
    Riopelle L
    Evans R
    DH Mr Roll DeDice
    Halter/Robertson L
    Kurland R

I will say Halter is looking more likely the leadoff since Robertson isn't getting on base very much. There's always Langford if needed.
I look for Evans to have a better year than expected.
Rivera has earned his spot in the order. He's getting many multi hit scrimmages. He could hit in 3rd or 4th depending how Sully wants the L/R.
I keep thinking Nelson Maldonado when I see Rivera at the plate. He may not have the high average you expect but he will be productive.
DH is wide open with Lastres, Shelnut, Riopelle/Cags the best possible.
I will revisit this next week before the season starts

Rivera coming back is a big deal. He was solid last year and played a very good SS. Very respected by his teammates. Hard to find a guy to step in and consistently perform as he does.

Agree with you on Robertson, although it kinda feels like Halter's bat has been a little quiet in preseason as well. I'm a little triggered by last season and always thinking he would hit his stride and it never really happened.
Gaining confidence in Slater. Sure seems to be the most consistent guy in the pen right now

    Thanks 87,
A few notes from scrimmages I've attended:
Agree that Robertson has not been getting on base as much as I'd like but neither has Halter- in fact, I cant remember Halter getting a hit. For now, I'd stick with Robertson leading off based on speed and Halter's tendency to K- last year was brutal watching Halter's struggles.
The Catcher position is the most interesting: I continue to favor Lastres as our best Defensive catcher - and the play you describe from last night- I've seen him make two other times. For a 6'3" 220 guy he is surpringly agile and quick behind the plate. Heyman not quite as agile behind the plate- I've seen a few low but catchable balls get through the wickets- but overll solid and he's been among our best hitters-- right there with Cags, Riopelle, Langford of late. I've see Heyman ripping the ball nearly every at-bat. And to throw a liitle more drama on the Catcher position:Alvarez- right now the 4th guy on the depth chart is also an outstanding defensive catcher and has a short contact hitter's swing- reminds me of Mike Rivera.- I see that he had two hits last night. So a harvest of riches at Catcher.
If I were Sully, I would try to find a a way to have Riopelle, Heyman and Lastres in the lineup together as much as possible. All three can hit and hit with power.
On Kurland - I sense that Sully is favoring him to start at second but I've not seen outstanding abilities when I've been there- his range seems ok not great and he's not lit it up with the bat. We'll see.
In RF- Evans has been hitting of late and likely has secured that spot.
Relief pitching of an elite standard remains the main challenge and we'll see how Sully can cobble together a quality staff and hopefully 1-2 guys merge as clear top guy(s)... a few in the mix that we've discussed. I'd like to see more of freshman Cade Fisher who comes in highly rated. Again, we'll see. T
Thanks for all your great work providing quality insights for our continuing discussion!

Some of the exit velos reported yesterday off the bats of Cags, Langford, Heyman and Riopelle were ridiculous. 110s and 115s is simply insane.

I hope and pray we can get away from the swinging for the fences mentality that Sully's teams seem to always have. I would much rather have guys on base all game long putting pressure on the other team's pitching and defense rather than a bunch of guys either striking out or hitting a HR. And also hope to see us get back to being a top defensive team that used to be a trademark of Florida baseball under KOS.

Agree as well on Halter. I've been promoting Robertson for so long and see Sully giving him every opportunity at practice so I keep him up there. It may fall back to last year that this team went on a run with Langford leading off. Slater and Jameson but more so Slater.

Agreed that the lead off man is still in flux. Langford clearly leads this team from the plate but I wish we could find a guy that could get on base in front of Langford. I'm with you on Lastres but the tea leaves show Riopelle is Sully's guy for Sproat and Waldrep. I assume Waldrep should be pitching today and it would be nice if someone could test that theory to see if Riopelle is catching again for Waldrep. I've been keeping an eye on Alvarez as well. He seems to be getting more time behind the plate late in scrimmages and in warmups. Interesting to see if Mike Rivera can learn him up some. Kurland showed surprising range yesterday on two bounding balls up the middle. They weren't the sharpest hit balls but he got to both and made positive throws that affected the game. The kid has good instincts about the game kind of like Jud did at CF with the throws he made to the right bag. But Thomas made the best play by far.

I'm still at odds with Jacob R. and his assessments. We aren't that far off but if someone reads this they might not understand reality.
Florida baseball position group preview: Designated hitter

"It's somewhat unclear how Caglianone's role will be divided up but he is expected to be a daily contributor."

"Here is Swamp247's projected depth chart at designated hitter:
Jac Caglianone / BT Riopelle / Tyler Shelnut OR Rene Lastres / Luke Heyman
Notes: Caglianone is expected to receive the lion's share of at-bats at designated hitter"

This doesn't mention Cags getting at bats while playing 1st. Yes he might be the DH on Saturday's if he is pitching on Sunday's but what about Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I read a few weeks back that Cags was the number one rated 1st basemen in America coming out of HS. Sure much of that comes from his multi-player ability but the kid can play 1st base quite well and has earned as much time as Sully can put him in at first. All that to say I believe Cags will get most of his at bats as a first basemen, not as DH.

Jacob seemed to think Fabian had a real shot starting at first with some insider info but that never materialized on the practice field that we saw. I appreciate Jacob giving the time by putting the info out there about Florida Baseball but know what you are saying please.

I'm old school baseball. As in Langford would never lead off for me because his first at bat is with empty bases and during games he would be following the 7-8-9 hitters, not the higher on base or batting avg hitters. I don't like lead off HRs. That is only 1 run.

I go back to my era of Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Musial, etc. No one would in that era put one of them to lead off, maybe 2nd or 3rd, but not leadoff.

Putting pressure on pitchers is a 1 - 2 hitters role.... get on base and cause the pitcher to at least pay attention to them when they are on base, all the while having to throw strikes (and off speed stuff) to a big bopper.

IMHO, Sully needs to find the two guys who can set the table for Wyatt "The Sheriff" Langford.

Pretty sure we went to the same school. I like WL in the 3 hole, Cags hitting cleanup and BT swinging in the 5 hole. I’m sure Sully can figure the rest of it out…
