Mertz is from Kansas (KC area, I believe), I doubt that Mullen's staff had much interest. Historically, We haven't recruited well, if at all, in the Midwest. So I'm sure they didn't spend any time trying to lure him. From what I have seen, Napier has a different attitude when it comes to recruiting. I believe Lagway is from Texas. The previous staff would have never picked up the phone to call him.
Thanks for the answer, I haven't seen any old Miller film. I watched a little Mertz highlight reel but they didn't show much of the bad stuff. Saw a lot of passes that would be eaten up by SEC elite defenders. May the best person win the competition even if we aren't talking about them yet.
There's some film from Ohio State's spring game that you can see. It's on Will Miles page. The story dates back to when Miller's transfer to here was announced.
I'm predicting a 6-7 season again. I don't agree that our season is easier for we have some tough road games and UT & SOW are definitely not gimmies. I am not sure what kind of qb we will have or how effective and I'm still not sold on our DC. I want to be more optimistic but I just don't see it. Hope I'm wrong.
I bet Jordan Gile the PWO could move the chains consistently, and I hope we dont hang our hat on someone who is inconsistent. Meaning high completion rate on passes since CBN likes to run it more. Someone who knows how to make half back swing passes with the ball in front of them, know how to throw a first down out pass to get a first down. Be able to hit a wr deep or run the ball when the defense allows a lane. Keep the chains moving and get points early. He should also be able to run a two minute offense. The spring game will show who has got it if all are given equal chances.
AR is a first round pick because of his potential he certainly didn't prove anything to me on the field. When he made spectacular plays he'd follow up with stupid decisions. He had so much promise until an agent came along and stole him in order to make the agent rich. Once again no loyalty to his college, team mates or hometown.
On second thought, Im feeling more optimistic about this coming season. I think we play with a bit of a chip on our shoulder. If the OL can gel, I believe our O will be better than last year. I believe our qbing will be better, to me AR was way too inconsistent and I think our passing will be better. Don't be surprised if Fred Mertz shines. Sometimes a change in locations can make a huge difference. Defense still concerns means we will find out a lot more if we have the right coaches on D. So, regular season, 7-5, and final record 8-5.
I’m kind of right there along your line of thinking. There are so many unknowns that we could both be way off. It would be nice to have some good surprises and win eight or nine games. It could definitely happen.
I actually think the D will be light years better. We'll be far better along the entire DL, including the 2-deep there. We have a glaring gap at Safety, but we have time to solve that.
We averaged 31.75 points per game with AR...but who's counting. Numbers like 2020? When we had 2 first round draft choices at receiver? Remember when we had a defense that could just about guarantee a win with 30 points? In 2006 during the regular season we averaged 28.08 pts per game and won the natty, that defense gave up an avg of 12.33 pts per game (all regular season numbers).
15-0. Wow love the optimism. Don't know what drug he is on but I would like some. But they just legalized pot here in Missouri so maybe I won't need his. But even high I just go 6-6.
I do remember that... I don't think that we are going to field a defense that does that next year... but I do see where scoring could get a little better if a receiver could stretch the field a little more and the running game improves in Napier's second year.
i'm thinking 8-4 before the bowl game. i believe our D Will be better with upgraded LB and also the young guys will step up at Safety. i have confidence in CBN so barring some unforseen injury i think Mertz will be better than just good. Did anyone see the realJoe Burrow when he transferred to LSU?
Have you guys looked at what Napier is doing? We will have one of the biggest heaviest offensive lines on the planet. Some 6’7 average and 350 or more. We will have a trio of stable backs to run the ball behind that line. We will not be flashy, we will throw it around some, but we will be designed to smash the ball downfield. We don’t need a superstar QB, we need a game manager. That might come in 2024. 2023? 8-4.
