Seems official I would not trust any ranking that put Hillsdale even minimally acceptable, at least based on their newsletters. Pure tripe, anti-intellectual historical falsehoods. There's a reason DeSantis chose them.
Whenever Democrats whine about Republicans attempting to influence what universities are doing, teaching, and promoting this is really the first thing that comes to mind:
I mean.. does a conservative actually have anything of value to add to this discussion besides trolling? Anyone? *crickets*
I mean, I've been around here long enough to know how this game works. Anything short of what you want to hear will be called trolling. We talk in circles where no consistent standard is applied to both Republicans and Democrats, somebody gets the last word and we move on. You want Too Hot to be a place where there's functional discourse? And I think it's fair to say that the liberals on this board have that power due to numbers, maybe you should start with "leading by example."
I led by example in starting the thread. So far I haven't seen conservatives come in here to say anything productive other than: 1. we like to see libbies squirm 2. funny troll gif 3. a meme from the princess bride So yeah. Do better. Tell me why this is a good thing and not just a disaster or a waste of money. Open to being made to feel better about it.
Starting a thread is not leading by example. Engaging in honest discussion without condescension, disrespect, and ad hominem is a good start.
Do you have something to add to the actual discussion or are you just going to whine more and post more memes?
Recent articles on this issue: Is New College of Florida Headed for a Hostile Takeover? DeSantis proposes sweeping higher education measures aimed at ‘indoctrination’ This level of micromanagement is ridiculous. More tenure reviews, presidents being able to participate in faculty hiring process of individual faculty?
First thing that comes to mind for me when people post stuff like this is that conservatives love affirmative action as much as liberals
If DEI initiatives are the cause of us getting into the top 5, and mere removal of those initiatives causes us to dramatically fall, that says a lot more about the criteria that goes into those "rankings" we all care so much about than it does about Ron DeSantis or the University of Florida.
As usual, if the rules go one way. And you will use government as a sword for your agenda in a particular manner, don't get mad when the other side does the same thing. It doesn't mean they like it. It means that you can never hope to win in politics if you live by libertarian and federalist principles, govern by libertarian and federalist principles, then expect your opponent to adhere to libertarian and federalist principles when they never do. You're left with the choice of adopting the same tactics that you despise, or lose endlessly. If Democrats hated that so much, maybe don't force that choice on Republicans.
DEI initiatives are not the main thing I'm worried about, although it is sad. The bigger issues are surrounding tenure review, and having presidents set up to be able to interfere in department hiring processes. This will do a couple of things right away: 1. Weaken faculty applicant pools 2. Hurt student success rates - because a lot of DEI initiatives exist in universities to assist with student persistence. In the immediate short term, that won't influence much. But in the long term, you will see weaker faculty, which means less research, weaker teaching, which means less research dollars, less satisfied and less educated students, and higher attrition and longer degree completion times. That will result in a drop in ranking in the medium to long term.
I'm so sick of hearing this. Where have democrats used political fiat to dictate any of the stuff we are discussing here? I'm being honest - I can't keep up with the news in 50 states - is there a liberal state where the governor is telling presidents they can get involved in faculty hiring? That we will review tenure whenever we want? That teaching conservative principles is literally not permitted?
So you're comfortable paying more money as a tax payer for this? I assume it would have to be a lot more based upon what I'm hearing in the faculty ranks.
