Washington’s proxy war against Russia is failing. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was unusually candid about the situation in Ukraine when he told the allies in Germany at Ramstein Air Base on January 20, “We have a window of opportunity here, between now and the spring,” admitting, “That’s not a long time.”

Alexei Arestovich, President Zelensky’s recently fired advisor and unofficial “Spinmeister,” was more direct. He expressed his own doubts that Ukraine can win its war with Russia and he now questions whether Ukraine will even survive the war. Ukrainian lossesat least 150,000 deadincluding 35,000 missing in action and presumed dead—have fatally weakened Ukrainian forces resulting in a fragile Ukrainian defensive posturethat will likely shatter under the crushing weight of attacking Russian forces in the next few weeks.

Ukraine’s materiel losses are equally severe. These include thousands of tanks and armored infantry fighting vehicles, artillery systems, air defense platforms, and weapons of all calibers. These totals include the equivalent of seven years of Javelin missile production. In a setting where Russian artillery systems can fire nearly 60,000 rounds of all types—rockets, missiles, drones, and hard-shell ammunition—a day, Ukrainian forces are hard-pressed to answer these Russian salvos with 6,000 rounds daily. New platform and ammunition packages for Ukraine may enrich the Washington community, but they cannot change these conditions.

Predictably, Washington’s frustration with the collective West’s failure to stem the tide of Ukrainian defeat is growing. In fact, the frustration is rapidly giving way to desperation.

Adequate sniper fire causes the opponent to fret and worry at all times and is very demoralizing. Although a small part it’s one of the scariest for the Russians.

I don’t think F-16s are the right move until we can give them a way to deal with the Russian IADS.

There is no reason for the U.S. to "surrender" the proxy war in Ukraine. Our highest priority goal is to help Ukraine win the war and get their land back. Failing that, our secondary goal is to weaken Russia so it is a long time before they can invade a neighbor again. The sanctions, if they hold up over the long term, will go a long way towards that goal. Damaging Russia's military will go even farther. And we have been doing that, and will continue to do that, up until the point that Ukraine surrenders or wins. Every dollar we spend on supplying Ukraine with weapons will save us $10 in future military spending, even if Ukraine loses. And if Russia loses and their military is essentially destroyed, we will save $100 in future spending for every dollar spent. We would be foolish to stop spending now, as well as the war has been working out for destroying Russia's military. Destroying Russia's military will make the world a safer place.

Trump is toast and a democrats best friend.

He will guarantee a democrat wins the next election.

I look at trump running for president like RBG hanging on to her SC position. It will end up helping the other side.

I tend to agree although I still wouldn't count the Orange One out. I thought that he had very little chance in 2016 and was proven completely wrong although Hillary Clinton, the DNC and her own campaign staff were as much responsible for Trump's unexpected victory as was Trump himself. Unlike 2016 if Trump is the Republican nominee the Democrats will take him seriously.

I disagree with the notion of accepting Ukrainian defeat if the current measures are not sufficient (particularly because they won’t be). We need to turn up the temperature in a deliberate fashion to cause Russia to look for a way out of this. Their hysterical challenge to us has been “Are you willing to start a world war over Ukraine?!?!” Our cold, unemotional response to them needs to be, “Are you?” Our position needs to be firmly that Russia cannot have Ukraine or even parts of it at this point. It’s gone too far for that. What we can offer them is something better than slices of someone else’s land. They can keep what’s left of their military, they can rejoin the community of nations, and they can not be responsible for destroying the peace of the world or worse.

    Agreed, Thank You!
I could not encourage every American and supporter of Western Democracy enough - Watch The Frontline (PBS) documentary about Puton and The Presidents.

It should leave NO DOUBT as to whom the principle threat to the US and our allies in NATO truly is.
