Of course they all get a first year to build. CBN has a lot of people here talking about a multi year (4+) rebuild. Our other new coaches didn’t get that narrative despite all of them having to rebuild in some way
He gets as long as he needs if the program is improving. The wheels completely fell off for our last three coaches. They were dead men walking. It was clear to all that they were done. You can’t exactly put a timer on it. Mullen quit and so did the team. That’s not salvageable.
Who is talking 4+? That is you. I, and I think most understand the rebuild, but I think 4 year+ is defined differently. But there were at least 2 goofs (on here) that said if we didn’t win a championship (SEC or Nattty) by 2024 then we needed to make …you guessed it … Another change! Im sick of it. The revolving door strategy does NOT WORK. A Saban, SOS, Urban don’t grow on trees. Let this man work out the blueprint. If by year 5 we don’t see semblance that it will never happen …then fine, it’s a discussion. But good Lord, this is just stupid what people are discussing now… after year 1.
It seems like CBN and his team of coaches and support staff are doing a great job with recruiting. The guys coming in have to know what all he expects from them, and they must have agreed to do it. Hopefully CBN will have the courage to make adjustments with whatever needs to change elsewhere. Just maybe CBN understood what he inherited. A lot of players left…. some weren’t going to play, and some may not have been willing to do what Coach was asking. Who really knows. But the guys who signed with Billy probably know what is expected of them. I’m looking forward to next season already. If CBN can continue recruiting at a better level, and get guys to work hard, play hard, we will get much better. I’m willing to give Billy all the time he needs to develop our team. I think he knows what he wants. The SEC is a tough place. Bama and Georgia have lots going for them. We have to build, and CBN seems to be doing that. Go Gators!!!
I'm speaking in generic terms, not specifics, but like it or not, its just not reality at UF (or most top Universities) that a coach is going to get to year 5 without showing a semblance that it will happen just to start discussing it. The discussion will be over and that coach will be gone before that. I agree, however, that no coach should ever be given less than 3 FULL years to show what they can put together (unless there is some sort of "for-cause" issue to fire).
Brian Johnson was the QB whisperer, and we saw actuality of that with the lack of skillset improvement in the QBs after he left, none. Mullen was/is a charade. Other than being blessed with the talents of Chris Leak and Tim Tebow when he was OC here at Florida, and the talents of Brian Johnson with Kyle Trask at UF and Johnson's time with Dak Prescott at Mississippi State, he really hasn't been a QB whisperer. Show me a QB that improved under Mullen without Brian Johnson. I've posted before that Johnson is the true Quarterback Whisperer of the two.
It is many people across these forums And there are very very few coaches who perform poorly multiple years and then suddenly turn it on. If you need 5 years to figure that out then I’d id love to work for you
That is not what we are talking about. We are talking about losing seasons in 2023 and maybe a barely winning season in 2024 (probably a losing season tbh). Under that path we still have people asking for more time. Obviously if we win 1-2 more games in 2023 and then 1-2 more games in 2024 (so 9-10 wins in 24 minimum) then he’s fine (assuming we are recruiting). That’s pretty self evident and not even worth the discussion. The question is if the projections play out. Similar season in 2023 as 2022 and maybe a 7 win season in 2024. What then?
Right because I use data and prepare for multiple scenarios But okay put your head in the sand for 5 years.
It’s not about wins and losses, improvement. Those 20 talented freshman he just brought in aren’t going to win games for us this year. Most won’t even be in the two deep. We dont know how good the teams on our schedule will be next year. There’s way more to it than looking at numbers on a sheet of paper to determine if a program is moving in the right direction. LSU was recruiting near the top every year and Mullen was recruiting in the next tier and taking low hanging fruit. We got players for the most part that the big boys passed on. I don’t care what the stars say but we don’t have very many elite players at all. Look at our pass rush and try to tell me that defensive line is elite and it’s coaching.
4+ years? I don't think so. I've seen some expectations that that it could take 3, which is perfectly reasonable from where I sit.
What are we expecting at the end of year 3? An SEC CG berth? 9 wins and being in every game, win or lose? BCS Playoffs? National Championship? Everyone here has a different idea of what is acceptable. Some think that BN should be able to pull a Meyer, after all this is The University of Florida, the elite of all elite programs that runs on autopilot, just needs a Captain. Others, like me, see what remains of a wrecked program that needs several years of rebuilding. Like one of Pell's 1979 players said recently, this program is in the worst shape it has been since those days during the Carter Administration. I agree with him. It will take 3 years to get back to decent and competitive against everyone we play. 5 years to contend for championships, whether they be league or national.
Post-Spurrier the baseline is making it to the SEC-CG (not necessarily winning it). Only Zook and Muschamp failed to pull that off, but Muschamp had an 11-win season that stood in its place a bit. Zook was a swindle away from making it in 2003. If Napier is not there (or very close, like Muschamp and Zook) by year 3 then I think things are going to get very hot for him.
Yes, I AM serious. Why is it that when a coach gets fired, so many fans chose to vilify him after he is gone? It happened with Zook. It happened with Muschamp. It happened with McElwain. Now, it’s happening with Mullen.
If you are correct, then we start all over again and this timetable gets another 5 years added to it. What these Einstein's don't realize is that the league far tougher at the top than it was back in the day. I made a prediction not that long ago that I would never see UF win another National Championship in Football or Basketball. I'm 57 years old and in (as far as I know) good health. I said that taking into consideration that we'll never give anyone a chance to be here long enough to build the kind of program that can win Championships again. I hate to say I might be right, but I might be right.
I wonder if some of our posters just expect the best things in life to fall out of the sky and land in their laps without pain or effort. For cryin' out loud, expecting an unobstructed stroll to the top of the SEC in year three, after being bogged down in total mediocrity for more than a decade, is beyond unrealistic - it's ludicrous. It's almost as goofy as being on our seventh coach of the 21st century and finding ourselves already "discussing" the possibility of making it eight if we haven't ascended to FB nirvana after three years of the new regime. SMH.
