There’s a handful at best of elite guys in that list, not nearly enough to compete with the big boys. I guess it’s called holes.
Do you need me to define it for you? Not the topic? The topic is the roster. Are you going to tell me TP doesn't factor into the equation? Hot take.
Outside of Meyer and one of the Zook years, getting and retaining a "handful of at best elite guys" over three recruiting seasons seems to be our ceiling. For whatever reason we can't regularly pull classes that compete with Bama, OSU, etc.
Simple fact of the matter is we don't know. We don't know if Coach Napier's recruits will play up to their rankings yet. We won't really know until the end of the season. In my opinion one roster being better than another can only be adjudicated through the lens of hindsight. All you can really make a judgment on is potential. I do not really know enough about the incoming class to make a call on potential. I do think we would have been in better position with Nick Evers on the team. He was a guy that wanted to be a Gator and held the recruiting class together after coaching change, yet somehow went to Oklahoma (and now Wisconsin) . I am not assigning blame to anyone here, btw.
IMO problem was less recruiting and more development and playing out of position. He wasn’t recruiting poorly. He wasn’t at UGA/Bama level though. But Billy hasn’t been recruiting great. Objectively it’s on par with Mullen. His rankings are what they are. We lost our top recruit. We can battle forever which guy had better recruiting classes. They key is can Billy maximize the talent here in a way Mullen could not. That’s a combo of positions, scheme, and development. That’s clearly TBD And if we want to improve on the occasional NY6 ceiling he has to be consistently top 10 and sometimes top 5 recruiting. He hasn’t gotten there yet But then we have to factor recruiting has changed. $$$$ is a bigger player and that’s our if his hands
I'm encouraged by CBN's recruiting and eye for talent. A few of our recruits this year received major recruiting ranking bumps after showing in the H.S. all star games. Also, CBN brought in Cyrus and Montrell, both of whom turned out to be some of the best transfers we've had and were major upgrades to the roster. I can attribute these 'upgrades' to someone that doesn't go by rankings, but rather by film, relationship, and perceived talent by our coaches. CDM checked out.. He had no interest in recruiting at the level necessary, and he also had no interest in upgrading our coaching staff due to his relationship with the coaches. CBN has very good relationships with his coaches, and as I've stated before, end of this year we will see if we are on track or not and what adjustments are needed in approach, coaching staff etc..
To add more misery to the total of 5, 6 more members of that 2020 signee class were not on the 2022 roster. That class lost a total of 11 players.
Held together the recruiting class and somehow went to OK? His mom was actively tearing the class apart and advocating against CBN. Why would we want someone who didn't win the job elsewhere and then ran to another team?
I may be remembering incorrectly, but he stayed a strong Gator commit until meeting with Napier. At that point, for whatever reason it didn't click. Again not assigning blame since I wasn't in those meetings. I don't remember any of the negative tweets from the family until after that meeting. As far as him not winning the starting job as true freshman, i don't think that should count against him. As far as running to another school ... um ... Mertz. I know he was the starter last year, but he's transferring, and he probably wouldn't unless he thought he had a better shot at starting 2023 at uf. We can what if this all day long, but he wanted to be a Gator and may have found a home here. Certainly our qb room would be better with him. And again, I'm not attacking Napier. I don't know what happened in those meetings. Question was about potential of this team, I think we would have more potential with him.
We don't really know if Evers loved UF or Mullen. By the time of his firing Evers looked stuck at UF if they would take him, except OK bailed him out. Then he bails on the head coach that wanted him. Mertz has one year make or break. Evers had four years to prove himself at OK but tried to find an open spot instead. Then as soon as he goes to Wisky he gets recruited over. Reports were that he could have proved himself to CBN and chose not to. We are better off without the drama generated by his mother.
Certainly it is possible we are better off without him. I personally think that we would be better off with a little more talent in the qb room, but I can see your point. Only time will tell, I guess.
At OU he was up against a pretty hot transfer -- Dillon Gabriel. He didn't club up the depth chart there much, and the word around Norman was that he was a disappointment. Plus, this year they brought in a 5-star and Gabriel's coming back, so there might not be much room for playing time there.
Yeah, it's all really conjecture at this point. Would bring value to our team ... who knows. I think he would have, but I have no real way of knowing all I can say is I hope one of our guys has a break out year.
So they guy quotes rankings and backs up his point while you sit here and “teach others how to learn”. What kind of propaganda are you selling here. Can’t handle a serious discussion with him?
