Remember the sports bar that used to be across from Library West before the Burger King that was also closed in that same locale? Once drinking age changed from 18 to 21, lot of those bars had trouble staying in business
I came to Gainesville in 1982 and remember a Crystal across from Library West. Maybe the Burger King was before my time. The sports bar I remember way back when was the Press Box on south 13th. Saw NC State beat Houston there as I did not own a TV.
You feel old? How do you think I feel? When I was attending UF I saw Rick Barry (Miami) and Pat Riley (Kentucky) playing basketball in the old gym. (Around 1966)
My old cred with regard to basketball was having to listen to Loyola beat Cincinnati in the Finals on the radio in Chicago. They didn't televise the NCAA championship games then. How things have changed.
Neal Walk. Brooks Henderson. Mike Leatherwood. Dave Cowan (fsu). Maravich. Many more. I was at UF from 67 to 74. I bet I didn’t miss 3 home basketball games. I think it was my sophomore year that LSU was in town with a 7:30 tip-off. I had a 7:00 midterm. I made the tip-off. The old Florida Gym was a great place to watch games.
I drove into G’ville off I-75 about a year ago, a little before midnight. I was driving on University headed toward campus. I hardly recognized anything, and so many of the landmarks were gone. I actually thought I was lost for a minute. I used to live in the student ghetto and even that is mostly gone. Progress…..I guess.
