I’ve found a couple in Oceanside, Mission Beach and I think La Jolla right on the water and in our budget. Think any wild libbies could walk up on us here?
Seems MB would be far more libbie than La Jolla. I find La Jolla too sterile for my taste. Very beautiful. MB is very festive during the day.
In honor of Too Hot, you’ll understand why Disney wanted control of the area around WDW. Anaheim comes right up to the front door of Disneyland.
Yes, La Jolla is an upscale suburb of SD. Quiet and “sterile”. If you want that kind of setting, then it’s good. Can’t tell if Oceanside is safe or not. I’ve only had brunch a couple of times there. Haven’t really spent too much time there.
A bit further north you've got San Clemente, San Jaun Capistrano, Dana Point, and Laguna Beach. Beautiful area, and yes OC has republicans....
You guys are great. Thanks for indulging me. Do you think staying on the beach is the best way to go? Is there any other unique views I’m not thinking about?
Looks like the zoo, Disneyland and a winery are happening. I’ll fill in the rest soon. 5 nights in the area.
to clarify, our VRBO was not on the beach....there's a part of mission that has a bunch of bungalows. Ours & I think all of them in that area had little astroturf type "backyards" with gates to walkways to the beach. We were about 100 yards from the beach & walked down for the sunsets. grabbed from the internet, but good shot of the walkways. loved the vibe.
Keep in mind that Anaheim (Disney) to SD can take upwards of 2 hours to drive. A suggestion is to fly into LA, knock off Disneyland the next day (anyways you will be up early because of jet lag) and then heading to SD for the rest of your time.
Oceanside and Carlsbad are both very safe. Great towns, but other than the Temecula wine area and Safari Park, it's a drive on I-5 to get anywhere. From La Jolla to the airport can take an hour in rush hour traffic. Carlsbad and Oceanside, 90 minutes or more. No traffic, it's not so bad. But CA rarely has no traffic. We've stayed in Oceanside before, and really like it. Nice to split the distance between San Diego and Anaheim. Also did a whale watch trip from Huntington Beach ( heavy red area), which was great. If you're just doing a day in Anaheim, and the rest in San Diego proper, stay closer to San Diego. If you're going to think about more points north like Capistrano and only a couple days in SD, Oceanside or Carlsbad are great.
Seems like you read my mind. I was thinking we’d stay just North of SD and be close enough to get to both Disney and San Diego. Thanks for the advice.

Dana Point which is closer to Carlsbad has some nice whale watching options. We were there over the Christmas break on this Captain Dave’s tour and missed seeing this gray whale birth by just a few days! Whale watching Dana Point: Passengers capture gray whale giving birth to calf | abc7.com
If you aren't put off by an hour's drive east I recommend a trip to the quaint town of Julian. It has a gold mine dating back to 1870 that is open for tours. When we last visited with our granddaughter in 2012 the mine operators were still finding gold but it is now operated more as a museum - retrospective of the era - than a working mine. Worth a visit and our grand daughter enjoyed it as much her father did when we took him there in 1980. San Diego was amazing. On our way home now and we will never forget the weather here. It never got over 72 degrees! We stayed in a beautiful VRBO home in Encinitas on acreage. Hummingbirds everywhere, every morning to hang out with while drinking my coffee. We did oceanfront dinners in Cardiff, Solana Beach and La Jolla. Food was awesome! Lots of sushi and seafood. Saw sea lions in La Jolla, did Disney, spent a half day at the Temecula wineries and cool old town and we did the zoo. Thanks again for all the tips and help!
Yeah. 72 degrees is soft hippie libbie weather. Real men are in Florida and Texas right now baking in 105 degree Freedom Heat.
