Question on NIL Money and Tuition/College Expenses: I am uninformed on how this works under the new NIL regime. If a football player receives NIL Money do they pay their own tuition, housing expenses, food, text books, etc. Another words, are these expenses that were normally part of the scholarship before NIL came into effect, still are paid by the College or is it now the responsibility of the player?. Also, if a player does not have NIL money, how is he treated?
No. Two separate things Lebron James is under contract with the Lakers(scholarship) Lebron James is paid by Gatorade( NIL)
Do you think athletes that get meaningful amounts of pay for play money are students?? They're just here for the cash
Most students are in college to make money, it just usually happens after they graduate. Lots of other students make money doing jobs or other side activities. We don't seem to single them out for some reason
Its like when you go to dinner. The owner pays the wait staff a fraction of their actual value and places the onus of providing "market value" on you, the customer.
No, the majority of students are in school to learn the skills to make them money, or at the very least earn a piece of paper that will assist them in making money. Same with the vast majority of student athletes. You go to work to make money. Its just kind of disingenuous to call them student athletes or have them compete against teams that are made up of student athletes like Vanderbilt or the bottom half of NCAAF. If they were student athletes who played well and therefor profited off their Name, Image and Likeness it would be different. But they aren't, they're getting paid to sign.
Perhaps part of a final solution will be the incorporation of courses such as: Defensive Foot Work 101 The History of Hydration Principles of Lowering Center of Gravity
Only the smart ones that know that NIL money can be fleeting and that there are expenses to pay for when the sports days are over.
I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop when these kids have to file income taxes on all this NIL money. It’s going to be one of those welcome to adulthood moments. I can assure you the hangers on that made money off a kid are not going to help pay the taxes on that sweet NIL money. I hope they are putting some of that money aside for the tax man.
One thing that has not been mentioned is what does the athlete have to do to fulfill his end of the NIL contract. I am sure that the use of his name, image, and likeness requires the athlete for photo sessions, interviews, attend corporate events, and so forth. Also, are there any penalties if the athlete harms the brand? In other words, get arrested, flunks out of school, or takes a unpopular position politically or socially.
I would welcome that after watching the piss poor defenses of the last couple of years in college football
But Lebron actually provides something for likeness and advertising to Gatorade. Most of NIL is pay for play, PERIOD. Do you dispute that?
To a degree, I do dispute it. We have no idea what these players will be asked to do in the coming year. Just because we are not seeing an immediate return on these NIL deals does not mean there won't be one. Traditional advertising takes time to be put together. So since it's only been 2 weeks since the players got on campus, I doubt anything has been put together yet. Also you need to think 21st century. These players are being signed for their social media influence. For posting on Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. Do you follow any players on these platforms? If not, then you wouldn't know if they have been posting about a product or service they have a deal with. Also signed to do autograph meet and greets, interviews for podcasts, zoom calls with "club" donors who donated for access to the players. If you didn't donate then you wouldn't have knowledge of these events or access to the donor podcasts etc Not everyone got a national NIL deal like Bryce Young and the only time that was aired was during the season. Now was there some component of a pay for play. Sure I think it played a part and I really don't care if it did. I will still enjoy watching college football every Saturday during the season.
After reading a number of your posts regarding NIL - I mean pay for play, perhaps I mispercieve but I get the impression that you don't care if they back a Brinks truck up to a kids door. You are going to enjoy watching the games regardless. This shit is not sustainable. Helen Keller could see this is a disaster in the making.
You are correct, I don't care who is getting paid. I do agree that it's not sustainable. I believe it will work itself out in about 5-6 recruiting cycles. Once an entire class works it's way through and the results are unsatisfactory the money will dwindle and level off.
Kk l Did not expect that we would be closer in agreement than I imagined. I hope it does not take 5-6 recruiting cycles. We have been through 2(?) and it is already a cluster F.
Instead of setting parameters and groundrules for college athletes getting paid, the NCAA stuck its head in the sand and now it's out of control and a free for all. Meanwhile, other big time programs recognized this situation early on, adapted and are getting the top players to come to their schools without the cluster^^^^ of the disorganized way Florida has approached it. You have coaches, the administration, Alumni Association, the University Athletics Assn., Gator Collective and Gator Guard all trying to raise money and influence young kids' choices without very much seeming cooperation among the groups. Thus, the Rashada mess and more to come unless those in power and control get a handle on things. Regardless of the specific facts, UF looks bad and behind the eight ball with the reality of big time recruiting.
