It "can" happen. But, wow, does it take a lot of things stacking up in your favor.

 

That's kind of the problem. It's not even equitable or spread around. It's just a stupid joke, as evidenced by this fiasco (and the McClain fiasco. . . and future fiascos. . . ).

And you don't have to choose. Soccer in the AM, American sports in the afternoon. That's the beauty of it. It never conflicts. Maybe if it's a night game over there it will run until 2:30 or so, but due to no commercials, it's still the best "back button" option if the Gators are playing at noon. Trust me, I'll still end up watching more action in the soccer game even if I'm just going "back" during commercials (It's really amazing how much dead time there is in football).

What brings me back is the passion that reminds me of the way college football used to be. Like an entire stadium, with no pipped-in music, just singing a song to their team.

 

I'm always going to watch the Gators. It's everything else that's lost to me. And if there are as many like me out there as I expect, that's bad news for the overall sport, especially any future national TV deals.

 

True. It was a special situation for Clemson to come on like they did and win championships. I think CBN is trying to borrow from both Clemson and Bama models to get this turned around. It is going to be a hard road and hopefully Gator fans and boosters can have the patience for it.

 

A road block to the figuring it out was Dan Mullen. He was the source behind players leaving the team and for not pulling players into the team via the Portal. Also, his firing created more turmoil. It is hard enough for a new head coach to take on a new team. Even harder when that program was going through a dumpster fire.

 

How would one describe what the Clemson model is? Seems to me it would be recruit at a near elite level but not quite top elite and then find an elite NFL QB.

I'll be the first to admit, I know very little about NIL. My comment is solely based on my background and experience. On issues with legal contracts, you can choose to say nothing that would influence a decision in a court, or make a public statement to influence a decision on a court or to clear the issue. Clearly, everyone has chosen to not say anything. Again, this is solely my opinion, not based on fact or any knowledge about the matter. My comment on the AD and the coach is that as leaders representing the University, they should at least make a statement clearing themselves of any knowledge regarding the matter. The fact that they haven't tells us that everyone is dirty in this playground. My opinion, like many others. Worth nothing, I get it. But like many others, I am frustrated that the UF athletic department is looking like a bunch of fools.

 

Clemson and Bama are VERY different with player retention. Much more emphasis on development with Clemson, and Bama is about churning the 5 stars until the cream rises to the top. That is one huge difference. I don't see our being able to recruit with Bama and Georgia, so we do need the transcendent QB with great leadership who brings talent with him. Lagway may be that person. I don't see Rashada as that person.

 

I agree but some of us are going to age out.

 

My kids went to Clemson and I follow them closely. Perhaps I can answer this...
1) Great culture. High character individuals who are team-oriented. It's amazing how many Clemson guys delayed going pro unlike so many on our team.
2) Really good recruiting, but recruiting that doesn't just try to "win" the ratings game just to make the fanboys happy. Instead it means picky recruiting and then investing in each and every player to get them to their potential. It's the opposite of UGA and Bama whose motto seems to be "churn em and burn em."
3) Great coordinators. Dabo did a good job in sharing the pay and the glory with his coordinators. This attracted top end coordinators- esp. on defense. Dabo also fired coordinators when they weren't getting it done. All this is quite a contrast to Muschamp, CDM, and so many more we have had.
4) A system that let anyone shine- including walk-ons. Again unlike some of our coaches, Dabo didn't care about your ranking in HS. He played the best players. So Hunter Renfrow- A 2 STAR WALKON- caught the winning TD vs Bama in 16.
5) A high-character head coach who sets the vision, and doesn't let short-term setbacks get in the way. And Clemson had MANY setbacks. So many. I can't imagine how our fanbase would have handled this, but Dabo stayed the course.

I describe the Clemson model as a "if you build it they will come."
Dabo was able to pull both Watson and Lawrence out of UGA's backyard based on this.
I'm sure Dabo didn't set out to only rank 10-15 most years in recruiting. But again he didn't care how it looked. He targeted the players he wanted, and was amazingly successful at pulling them in.

We have a far harder schedule than Clemson, so we probably need to recruit better than he did just to win our conference, but it's a good model.
It just needs some tweaks for it to work for us.

 

It absolutely is consolidating a top tier based on who can funnel the most money.

In the past if you were a top-flight RB you'd be looking at Alabama or OSU or Texas, etc. And if they picked up another top-flight RB you'd look elsewhere. Now there's a booster willing to give the other RB $5M and you $5M and you start thinking differently.

Alternately you'd have kids who'd pick their home state school because there was an emotional attachment. That's all gone.

 

Not even sure how a young kid making that kind of money can even stay motivated and hungry.
I prefer the old dirty system where coaches cheated and worked the system.

 

Lots of people get rich and when they do they generally just want to get richer.

That said. There is a real incentive problem in college football. It's hard not to look at AR's time and realize his draft status will be on promise alone and what he did in college was largely ornamental. That should scare CFB fans. One thing's for certain: for HS prospects winning games in college is a cherry on top now, not the goal.

Exactly right. Clemson has fallen off pretty hard in recruiting, too, getting outboxed by the big money players.

Up until NIL Clemson was routinely top 5 in recruiting. Top 10 since but they're at risk, buffered only by playing teams like Wake Forest, Duke, VT, BC, etc.

The talent drop-off is going to hurt their chances of getting into the CFP as their top classes drop out in two years.

 

Entertainment.

Specifically "College Football"

 

When your ship has gone off the charts you find out who the followers are.

That is what I take from this, a display of zero true leadership.

 

Leicester would be like Wake Forest winning the NC. Clemson more like Tottenham or Arsenal.

 

Again, Tottenham or Arsenal. You're in the Big 6, but still looking up at the financial behemoths like Chelsea, Liverpool, City and Man U. But Clemson is no slouch. Still better than most in all the key metrics. No reason you can't win, but those four are always going to be spending more.

 

That's another problem. Your generation is the wealthiest in US History and they're checking out (voluntarily or not) the fastest.
