Fans of Olivia Dunne, at an LSU away game, a gymnastic meet at Utah, “disputed” the meet, with LSU now calling for more security at away games.

What’s interesting is that no one rushed the court or tried to accost her … instead, a large group of mostly male fans waved posters of her and chanted her name throughout the meet, causing accusations that they were taking away from other athlete’s performances and being distracting in general for a sport that normally expects fans to observe some etiquette.

Two things … one … at what point do rowdy fans cross the line? And why is there a line in sports like golf and tennis, and apparently gymnastics, where you often see players complaining about any little noise at all coming from fans… verse basketball and football were fans are actively trying to annoy and distract players…

And two… does Dunne have some responsibility in this, since she trying to be a social media influencer/celebrity in addition to being a college gymnasts?

Not sure there is good answer to this. Increases in security costs money to these programs that are already mostly money losers. I don’t think college players should have to hire their own bodies guards… but since some of them are basically professional now and social media celebrities… maybe they should.

Golf is another instance where silence seems to have become the norm. Don't know if it is a rule or not but fans have been thrown out for getting loud. That said a honking the horn on the back swing of a golfer can certainly distract / startle a player. The question is where do we want ultimate focus that requires silence. I might say the gallery of an observation deck during surgery.
