The NCAA Division I Council voted Wednesday to turn volunteer assistants across certain college sports into paid full-time coaches, a change that has major effects on baseball and softball teams previously limited to two paid assistants. The proposal increased the number of countable coaches in baseball, softball and ice hockey to four in each sport starting July 1. The council denied an additional increase to five countable coaches, which includes the head coach. For years, major college baseball and softball teams had to use a third assistant who was technically labeled a volunteer despite the growing prominence of the sports. The limitation forced head coaches to make difficult decisions about the structure of their staff. Volunteer assistants could not recruit. "These changes will ease the burden on campus compliance staffs and increase the number of coaches who can assist with recruiting activities,” said Lynda Tealer, executive associate athletics director at Florida and chair of the Division I Council.
Need to increase the amount of money for scholarships also or the number of scholarships which ever applies.
Amazing on how long this took. It's time to scrap the NCAA model and move towards a true Power 5 league in order to eliminate being dragged along by schools that aren't financially competitive.
Does this mean they can't get NIL Camp money any more since they are now professionals??? I jest, kind of.
Think she would be well served to spread her wings a little. Get some experience outside of UF, would likely make her a better coach down the line
With the change in the portal rule earlier this week to “one and done,” lightning has struck twice for the NCAA.
At the banquet last night, coach Walton announced that Cassady Brewer was the new paid assistant coach and she’ll be working 1st base and with the catchers. I was a little late with my suggestion to Coach Walton - I suggested we hire Jocelyn Ano for these reasons: She’d be a great coach to help develop a home run swing She would obviously have the name to be a great recruiter And It would piss off Patty Gasso! But Alas, Cassady Brewer it is. I wish her the best.
Cass will be a great hire.....you couldn't find someone that grew up on the ballfield more than her. She absolutely has lived it her whole life. A grinder who made herself into an elite player.....played little league with the boys for several years and was better than most. And she knows the state. Played at Apopka and UCF, dad is coach at Apopka HS, brother was an AA at West Fl and coached there and Stetson before now at Miami, uncle Rodney played for UF, sister played at Aub and was a college head coach before motherhood. Lower key personality than Amanda Lorenze but will still relate
