Somewhere along the way, the athletic department just lost it and gave up their edge. They got complacent and thought the brand sells itself.

Most importantly, they forgot where we are and how it works down here. We’re in the SouthEast, not the NorthEast!

Good point. A two word answer: Nick Saban

He revived the Alabama money machine that had been semi-dormant and it changed the way recruiting was done. Ohio State jumped in quickly with the same and followed by Ga once Kirby arrived (he learned from his mentor)

You must know that the UAA does not pay. That would be illegal. Listening Jimbo? Lane.
Boosters, like you, have to step up and pay the bribes.

    That would be illegal.
NFL and the players association negotiated the rookie salary cap.
To do what you suggest, you would have to let the players unionize and negotiate terms

ESPN doesn't really invest much in recruitment, to be fair.

I think most people need to realize that there is a distinction to be made between sports media sites and news sites.

Sports media outlets are basically just gossip blogs and have no journalistic standards.

If you read phrases like "Sources close to the situation..." Where they don't actually fact check or cite sources, you can pretty much bet on it being unsubstantiated rumors. Sometimes rumors are true, other times they can come up with convenient spins like "The situation changed after our last report" to cover when it's BS.

Clicks = money. The more drama these sites drum up, the more money they get. There is no journalistic integrity tied to that.

Why? You really think this soulless mercenary is the difference maker for us? I've seen film of this guy. What's so great?

Maybe we shouldn't have chased off the guy who wanted to be here. And done so for literally the worst reason ever.

Mullen was never a strong recruiter and that was known 15+ years ago. He's an old school style coach who thinks if talent is somewhat evenly distributed, he can coach 'em up and win his share of games. He just got blindsided that our top rivals could accumulate the level and depth of talent they have.

Those schools made the bet the NCAA needs them more than they need the NCAA and they were right.

Which is why "kids making money" should have always been an NFL/Professional League issue. Now the entire thing is corrupted beyond measure. Honestly, at this point we might as well go full European Soccer mode and professionalize it to the friggin youth level. Get them in young and build their loyalty and talent until they're ready for the varsity.

You're right in that one player - especially one that is still pretty raw - wouldn't normally be a make-or-break.

But look at our QB situation on the depth chart. We didn't put all of our eggs in one basket, but the other baskets (or eggs, I don't fully understand this metaphor) are no longer here for various reasons.

I don’t believe contracts alone will fix all of this. You may be able to lock them up at a specific school for longer terms, but you’ll still have the bidding wars on kids out of hs, and nil can and will still be used to sweeten the deals.
And some schools will still offer one year deals that other schools won’t, and all the other schools will follow suit, then we’re right back in the same predicament.

Similar to the ridiculous buyouts coaches get nowadays. These deals are asinine, but if your competitors are willing to give them out, you’re going to be forced to do the same, or be left behind.

It's probably the only hope for the sport. Burn it to the ground and rebuild from the ashes with higher academic standards, etc. so that the NFL is forced to pick up the player development ball.

I don't know about unions. There really isn't a management/labor structure here as the "management" isn't writing the checks. These are just personal services contracts. I.E. Wild Wild West.
