The developments at New College are yet another series of despicable actions by governor "Jawohl" . . .

After Condemning ‘Trendy Ideology’ in Higher Ed, Florida’s Governor Targets a Small College

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis wants to reshape New College of Florida into a “classics” college and a “Hillsdale of the South” that rejects “trendy” political views — sparking opposition from some students and alumni who worry that the public liberal-arts institution will no longer be welcoming to a diverse student body.

DeSantis announced on Friday the appointments of six new members to New College’s Board of Trustees, including conservative activist Christopher Rufo, who has led a campaign against critical race theory and diversity initiatives in education.

In a tweet shortly after his appointment was announced, Rufo said: “Left-wing radicals have spent the past fifty years on a ‘long march through the institutions.’ We are going to reverse that process, starting now. Gov. DeSantis has laid out a vision for recapturing the institutions and restoring them to American principles.”

Rufo also said in a different tweet that he wants to abolish the college’s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, create a new core curriculum centered around a “classical liberal arts model,” restructure the college’s administration, and hire new faculty members with expertise in “constitutionalism, free enterprise, civic virtue, family life, religious freedom, and American principles.”

If these new board members are able to take control of the decision-making at New College, then the school is kaput. Alums won’t contribute money, teachers will quit, and students will go elsewhere. The state will own a nice piece of property.

Beautiful campus right on Sarasota Bay. Would make a nice retreat for Christian Nationalists who believe the right things after the students leave.

For years local Republicans, including pretty powerful ones in state politics like Joe Gruters have touted the successes of New College. Have made powerful statements against any sort of state intervention. Now they’re allowing an all out assault on this local institution. It’s sad, yet completely expected in this environment to see them bend the knee.

Now, Duval County is withholding a book about Hank Aaron because it discusses his time in Jacksonville, including facing segregation. Like I said when DeSantis and the Republicans were passing these laws, it was all about suppressing truths/history they don't want to reckon with.
Children's book about Hank Aaron currently under review | firstcoastnews.com
Right now, 26 books for grade school students in Duval County are being held for review by the district to determine if they comply with a new Florida law. Duval County Public Schools is currently waiting on state guidance before accepting or rejecting those books as part of school curriculum or into school libraries.

One specific children's book currently under review by the district is about an athlete who was an American hero. Before becoming the home run king of Major League Baseball, Hank Aaron played minor league baseball in Jacksonville. But a book about that time might not be permitted in Duval County schools.

The book "Henry Aaron's Dream", which was written by Matt Tavares, is about the rise of Hank Aaron from a young boy in the segregated south to a Major League Baseball star.

A significant portion of the book focuses on a young Henry Aaron playing minor league baseball as a 19-year-old in Jacksonville in 1953. But right now, the book is being held for review as Duval Schools reviews the book's full content to determine if it is age-appropriate and compliant with Florida law. The district's full statement regarding review/rejection of books can be found below.

Hard to believe that were it not for the cousin-humping video he would likely still be representing me in Congress. People hereabouts would vote for scabies if it ran as a Republican
