Pwo’s can be cut from the roster at any time for any reason. Whatever NIL deal you give them to cover their costs can fall through. They have less access to early summer camps, training table, etc. There’s a lot of risk for the recruit. I don’t think you’re going to be getting a lot of desirable recruits this way, nor is anyone else. A few outliers are possible, but it’s not really a way to just sign an extra class worth of high end recruits.

I’m all for you two trying to set this up, but don’t think it will be as successful as you imagine. I haven’t seen any examples of this happening anywhere. An occasional 4 star may take a pwo offer to go somewhere he REALLY wants to go, but this is not happening anywhere that I’m aware of in any kind of numbers. Nobody I’ve seen is using this method to pile up real talent.

Agree, Bama over signed for years using, or abusing, the grey shirting process and handing out medical hardships like candy.

They handed out a lot of hardships to clear out rosters spots. No doubt about that. Now, most of those guys are hitting the portal instead.

There wasn’t as many grey shirts as people implied. There was a big 5 star that wanted to wait until signing day to commit and lost his spot and decided to grey shirt anyway. That kind of started all the continued talk about that being a regular thing. Its not really that beneficial either. Those kids aren’t really contributing anything until they are actually taking up a scholly, and it limits them on numbers again the following year anyway.

11th in numbers; 5th in player quality average. Most of the teams ahead of us have 4-5 more signees than we do.

I’m talking more in the past, have seen the “grey shirt” section behind the bench with 20 kids sitting there. That’s 20 kids that could have been playing elsewhere. Sure, most chose that path but not all of them.

Regardless... it still matters now that the NIL can pay for players that are NOT on scholarship. That is true now and is very real.

Now we know how Bama used to get and keep so many gray-shirt players even before the NIL was legal. I always suspected that they had some system on "compensation" fort these types of players.

Yes, but the point is that even non-scholarship players can and probably get financial compensation.

Nobody has 20 grey shirts man. I’m not sure why you would think that. That wouldn’t even make sense. Every grey shirt you take would count against your next class. Taking 20 would mean you could only take 5 hs. players the following season. I’m not sure what you’re thinking of, but it isnt grey shirts.

Top players may not make that choice but the entire TCU roster probably wouldn’t have offers at UF. There’s a lot of 3* guys in the first round every year.

Gray shirts are put on scholly after their first fall semester, and each one you take would remove a roster spot from the following year’s recruiting class. This did not happen in the numbers you think they did. Maybe one every few years. Like I said, they just aren’t that beneficial. The more you take this year, the less you can take next year.

I don’t know what you guys are thinking of, but it isnt grey shirts.

They would also probably still prefer to have their guaranteed roster spots and scholarship benefits at TCU as opposed to taking a HUGE risk on not getting either at FL. There is a lot of risk for these guys.

I don’t know why we’d want to pile up an extra class worth of 3 stars either. I thought we were trying to use this to stack up more of the top talent.

Do you think that right now with the NIL that teams like Bama or UGA have NO walk-ons that are making NIL money? Forget the gray-shirt distinction for a minute, and tell me if you think NO walk-ons are getting paid by NIL?

It's interesting that just a few years ago teams could have up to 125 total players on their home team counting walk-ons. Now it only 105 and that could change again soon. If you had the NIL cash, and a need for good players but you're at your scholarship limit of 85 players? Would you entertain getting a good player in a position of need as PWO? One good enough to play as emergency backup?

Does the NIL explicitly exclude a team from allowing a walk-on from getting NIL compensation? I wonder...

I also wonder if there are teams out there doing that right now.

These are 3* guys that we are getting in tge portal for the most part. Bama nor geor would take the guys we are taking. There are a ton of 3* guys out there that will play on Sundays. I’d take my shot at a big program as a pwo if I was being overlooked and thought I had what it took. A couple years and no shot, I’d transfer to ucf I guess.

For every 3* we take, there are 100 more just like him that have potential to be much better than their ranking. It can’t hurt to stash them and see how they pan out.

Yes this, especially at the QB position. I think we have at least one QB as a PWO... need more of them.

Chance’s are the kid never sees a snap and in a couple years, he can take what he learned with three years of eligibility and play at a lesser school. Maybe he’s smarter than he is athletic and chooses a free education at UF.

I think there are pwo’s getting nil deals, yes. I do not think they are getting the kinds of benefits that you think they are though. Likely nowhere near what the normal scholarship athletes get just for their scholly benefits. Not on average, anyway.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t try and I wouldn’t discourage you from trying to start a collective that dealt just in this. I’m simply saying I don’t think you’re going to have a ton of success luring the types of kids you think you will using this model. Bama and Georgia are not stacking up 1st and 2nd stringers with pwo’s. If there were pwo’s on the field for either of those teams, it’s all the announcers would talk about during the games. They would not be able to resist it.

Walk on policy does not exclude walkons from receiving nil deals, nor did I imply it did.

I do not believe there are teams doing what you think they are doing, no. I do think there are walk ons getting some nil money, but not to the extent that you think they are.

So why do we need 20 or so more portal pirates on the roster? I thought we were talking about stacking up elite talent. I get that you would take that chance, but you have to realize that me and you are nothing like the majority of these kids we’re discussing.
