“cell phone and video showing him following one of the victims” — where are you seeing that?

Bryan Kohberger was stopped by police minutes from Idaho murders home late at night in August | The Independent

Suspected murderer Bryan Kohberger was pulled over by police late at night in his Hyundai Elantra just minutes from the home where he allegedly knifed four students to death three months later.

A citation from Latah County Sheriff’s Office, obtained by The Independent, reveals that the 28-year-old criminology PhD student was stopped by police on 21 August for failing to wear his seatbelt.

The traffic stop took place at around 11.40pm at the intersection of West Pullman Road and Farm Road in Moscow, Idaho.

It is not clear what Mr Kohberger was doing in the area at the time – just 1.7 miles and a five-minute drive from the home on King Road where Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were stabbed to death on 13 November after returning from a night out.

That might not get cleared up until the trial.

Didn't see that in the affidavit.

Im guessing it was equal parts drunkenness, laziness and denial. Probably thought something weird was going on but I highly doubt she had any inkling 4 of her roomies were dead. Probably made sure the creep was gone and then passed out until noon. Party house stuff.

I’m also guessing his mask was a black covid mask. So he might not have resembled the quintessential burglar in a ski mask.

Thanks. Went back and reread that. After seeing the initial police evidence, I’m skeptical of the claims made there. The police affidavit can’t trace his steps better than the several square miles (cell tower coverage zones), so I’m not sure how the reporter can claim his “cell phone pings” followed the victim’s every move for weeks….

Also skeptical of the value of articles like the one above, that he got a traffic ticket within minutes of the murder house 4 months before the killing … they lived within minutes of each other … pretty much everything he did was within minutes of the victim’s house.

I mean, I think he’s guilty as hell, but if we’re on his jury, I’d disregard those sort of things and really only care about the physical evidence.

Edit: It’s also worth pointing out that the ultimate source of that article is the Daily Mail. It’s MSN reposting the NY Post, quoting an anonymous source first published by the Daily Mail. The Daily Mail already posted one “fake news” story on this, about him acting like a loon in the holding cell.

It is a bit narrower than just the cell tower coverage. Every tower has 3-6 antennas and you directionally know which antenna as well as any additional towers he registered on. Quite a bit of data can be acquired.

Sometimes we get dispatched (fire dept) to respond for unknown medical calls made from people who hang up or are incapacitated. Notes will often mention where their last signal pinged from and can narrow it down to a pretty specific area including down to a specific building.

There are ways that can happen without the location being determined by the cell phone towers. Apple, and probably android, can automatically send your GPS coordinated to 911 if you activate an emergency call, for example. It's also possible to accurately locate a call if it's made from through a WIFI router instead of over the air. But in this case, just having your phone on you, not making any calls, I don't think the cops can narrow down the location just by cell tower data. I mean, if they could, they probably would have said so in the affidavit. Instead of saying the suspect was known to be at a certain address, they said he was in the service area of a certain tower ... which can be a large area. In the cases in the report where did state his exact location, it was because they had him on film, then they used the cell phone data to verify that the cell tower service area included his known location. I guess that's a way to show that cell data was reliable supporting data at showing what region he was in, but nowhere does it say or even imply they were able to track exact locations.

Now that they have the phone presumably, they might be able get a ton a location data off it. Those things are serious NARCs.

The video of him following the victim in the grocery doesn't require cell phone pinging. the fact that it he is wearing gloves when the weather doesn't warrant it raises suspicions. location data that is being referenced seems to infer that there was much better location info than range of tower but that remains to be proven.

Have you seen the video? If it exists, it’s more damning evidence, for sure. But the police report doesn’t mention it. The Daily Mail seems to have shameless run a fabricated story saying he was bragging about the stabbings and telling cops he’d stab them too, while in custody. So I’ll believe there is video of him stalking the girls when I see it, or the report originated from something other than the Daily Mail

The video doesn't exist. There's too much hearsay about this case getting spread by questionable media outlets. Until it comes to trial or more evidence is released by law enforcement officials, I won't believe anything that's not in the affidavit.

One thought I had on why the roommate didn’t call the police is the possibility of illegal drug use. Just speculating, but there would have to be a deterrent that makes it a less obvious move to simply reach out to the police. Between potentially altered thought process and fear of repercussions, this would make sense to me. Still just a guess.

So this whole case was solved because he left DNA on a knife sheath that he left at crime scene and that DNA was cross referenced to a 23 and me database. Seems like that wouldn’t take very long and doesn’t exactly make him out to be a genius. Quote below from article

“ He allegedly left behind a tan leather knife sheath that had "Ka-Bar" and the United States Marine Corps eagle globe and anchor stamped on it, according to the affidavit. Investigators wrote that they found DNA belonging to Kohberger on the sheath. “

    The 23andme stuff is unconfirmed.

The affidavit only says that on Dec. 27, police in Pennsylvania recovered a sample from the trash outside the Kohberger family residence in Albrightsville.

The Idaho state crime lab determined that the sample found in the trash likely belongs to the biological father of the person who left DNA on the knife sheath.

It sounds like they found him simply from the car and then confirmed he did it with the DNA.

If he hadn’t left the sheath I think they would have quite a bit of circumstantial evidence suggesting he did it but I don’t think they would have been able to get a conviction. Assuming no further evidence is uncovered after his arrest anyway.

The evidence we saw in the affidavit was only what authorities felt was needed to make the arrest.

I bet there's much more they have they are not revealing at this time.

And I bet they will be getting much more now that the suspect has been arrested.

I also agree with the possibility @WESGATORS brought up in post #134 above regarding the possibility of illegal drug use as the reason for the delay in calling law enforcement. That makes more sense than anything else I can think of.

They have to turn all of the evidence over to the defense now I believe.
