He knew 2023 was a do or die year. When the Poodles called, he got a reset. Stricklin didn't beg him to stay.
Too many guys who played at mid majors or low level programs like VMI. They are not physically or mentally equipped to play big boy basketball. The WVU game showed it.
The guy who followed Donovan had an impossible job, whoever they were. For the most part, Mike did a good job. His ceiling was too low for UF. Sadly, we're finding out that UF's floor is much lower now.
It seems every team we play has far better, tougher guards that can shoot, drive, and make FT’s. We don’t have that now nor do we have any reliable shooters; sure, Fudge and Reeves are athletic and can occasionally make sensational drives and dunks but that doesn’t happen often. We are not a good team now, sadly. They do play hard but all of the SEC teams play hard and better. You simply can’t win when you commit 20 turnovers in a game. Couple that with poor 3 point shooting and just so hard to win. It’s disappointing but I’ll continue to follow this team and hope they get better, a lot better.
I know social media was rough, but its rough on every power 5 coach at times. Were there other incidents though? Was his wife berated at Publix? For sale signs place on his front yard? Death threats (aka Shark boy)? I don't recall any games where he was booed, at least as far as I could tell. I understand why he left. I would have done the same if I'm in his position. Lower expectations at GA and a new deal. He will not potentially be fired at the end of 23, as might have happened here.
yeah… I dunno. If you get the right guys from mid-majors, it works. Look at lsu. I think there are plenty of really good players at that level capable of making that jump. I thought we found a few. I still think they are better than they have shown.
It's simple, this Gator fanbase has losing fatigue. Everyone thought this current basketball team would be better than White's last season. Now we endure this crap and realize that Mike White is coming back to the Exachtech center next Saturday afternoon as the Georgia head coach with a great chance to kick our ass. VERY discouraging!
The way they are playing now, that’s a loaded question. But if you had asked me at the start of the season, I’d have said “yes” to, at least, two of the three. Thus… my “on paper” caveat. Combine that with CC not playing thru a torn labrum… and I had every expectation this was a better roster.
I can understand why thinking Lofton would be a better PG, but Flemming was pretty decent last year, and Fudge hadn’t done anything at LSU the previous year. Wish we would have held on to the freshman instead of trading them.
Maybe if we offer Golden and Napier as a package to someone like Coastal Carolina Gators could get a reduction in buyout payments.
the heat is on Stricklin already. But I don’t think basketball … especially on a coach’s first season… moves the needle.
Ridiculous take. White got a long leash at UF and kept going sideways. No one mistreated him. Twitter and message board venting happens everywhere. His wife got offended that some fans would complain in the stands (not to her, to each other) when our guards stood around and dribbled away the shot clock for the gazillionth time. If he left for those reasons, he’s softer than a squishmellow. In reality he left because our program was stagnant. He knew he’d be fired at the latest after this season, if not after the end of last year before he jumped. Moving to UGA gave him several more years making millions before he might find himself on the hot seat again. I’m not thrilled with Golden so far, but that doesn’t mean a change wasn’t necessary. It was.
I was just thinking about Stricklin. Trying to point to something he’s gotten right and that wasn’t already in process when he got here is like trying to find a virgin in a brothel. Dude has been in over his head from day 1, he has no idea how to manage daily affairs at an elite place like UF and seems to choose the “ok let’s settle” option on every decision he makes. It’s just beyond frustrating to see what has happened to so many of our great sports programs - football, basketball, women’s tennis, women’s soccer, men’s golf etc. as frustrating as the last few months have been, haven’t given up on TG yet though, still early in his tenure and he was left a pile of poo by the last guy. Next year will be a better judge of what he’s capable of hopefully.
It’s a high percent but not 100%. Maybe if you hires Nick Saban or Kirby as your coach or would be 100%. You can’t be bad at everything else while also adding in two scandals with female sports teams.
