I would see news like this is nothing but negative, climate catastrophism of the first order, only to get worse. But this seems for two of us for this year, with Putin trying to use winter against the European civilian population as a weapon to justify his evil conquest

Isn't this temporary good news for Ukraine? I mean the weather, considering Russias assault on the power infrastructure?

Certainly scary in terms of climate pattern but good news in the short term.

Russia being Russian, they were never a culture known for humane treatment, especially in time of war.

If only we had some leverage over Israel to make them see reason. For instance, if their entire economy and defense were dependent on the good people of the United States, then maybe they would be more inclined to our perspective of this issue.

Israel walking a tightrope between US and Russia. It is now no longer worried about pissing off the US more than pissing off Russia.

Of course most of the larger world has been less timid about shifting its weight towards Russia.

    2022 marks the de-Westernization, de-dollarization, de-Americanization of the world ...

Israel is not and has never been a U.S. ally. Some people remain confused about this fact…

Well Israel is for Israel first, and Benji has gone completely crazy. He's gone full Trump - he wants a license to steal domestically for his family and has gone far right with foreign policy that is certain to inflame violence and expanded warfare in the middle east.

This is complicated by the insanely orthodox faction of the Jewish electorate.

It's a bit hard to be sympathetic to right wing hardliners using guns and bulldozers to build settlements in other countries.

I understood it first when the Lapid government did not go full throttle with the West and basically didn't say too much and didn't join the sanctions regime. They have day-to-day dealings with the Russians in Syria and a de facto unwritten agreement that the Russians are keeping the Iranians from getting too mischievous there, even though the Iranians are overstretched and don't really have the ability to create as much mischief as they normally would.

But then as Russia got more extreme in Ukraine, the Lapid government understandably and correctly spoke up. Now this government is backing away even from that

They would do the same to us, given the chance. Don't kid yourselves.

An interesting article that goes a long way towards explaining why the Russians are almost as angry with other pro-Russian groups as they are with Ukraine, and why different Russian groups don't work well together. The Chechens and Buryats, for example, believe themselves to be a better class of soldier than the other groups, so they don't occupy trenches or even fight. They occupy local houses and loot. Ukraine recovered a notebook from a Russian soldier that complained about the conditions as well as the tension between different Russian groups.

An unexpected glimpse of disillusionment in Russia’s trenches

It's no wonder that Russia is losing this war. Their army is the exact opposite of cohesive. Officers afraid of front line combat, entire groups of soldiers committed more to burglary than fighting, etc.

You exaggerate. Israel is an ally … just a relatively bad one, considering the amount of aid they receive from us. The fault is ours, though, not theirs. When a parent has a favorite child and gives them whatever they want, no matter what they use that money for, no matter how often they don’t follow sagely counsel, and never so much as threatens to cut their allowance regardless of behavior, then it’s the parent’s fault.

We have plenty of leverage over Israel. It's just not politically viable to use it. It's not just IPAC these days but evangelicals who insist the US "stand strong with Israel." The tide is going to turn within the US Jewish community in the next decade or so. Millennial and Gen Z Jews are rejecting Zionism, my kids included.

Cuts both ways a bit, IMO.

A mild winter is certainly good for Ukrainian citizens from a humanitarian perspective. And it makes it easier to sanction Russian gas and oil.

But it also makes it easier on Russian soldiers and makes it more difficult for an alleged winter offensive for Ukraine.

Truth. That's in theater. But I think on balance, a mild winter is better. There's also the issue of European public support, which would be a lot more tested in a frigid winner

A key for Russia’s torture of all these women it’s systematic and state sanctioned.

“We see sadistic, systematic behaviour,” says the program’s lead psychologist.

This is not a normal enemy,” said the rehabilitation program leader. These are sadists trying to exterminate the Ukrainian people.”
