I don’t think you can extrapolate future results versus one (rivalry) game, and there are plenty of examples in the FSU-UF rivalry that illustrate that point. TCU needed a last second field goal to win over what turned out to be 6-7 Baylor. They’re in the NC game. I know everyone points to the blocked extra point against LSU as being a stroke of luck, but don’t seem to recall that FSU was on the goal line with 80 seconds to play when they bungled a snap that was recovered by LSU. Score there, and the final is likely 31-17, and there isn’t as much discussion about luck, nor is the block even a consideration. We also could/should have won against NC State, but that’s how it goes. After that Clemson loss, we haven’t scored less than 35 points in any game, rolled up a string of 400+ offensive performances, and didn’t lose any playmaker to graduation, save for Pokey Wilson. Our schedule next year is easier. I don’t see a game other than LSU, Clemson, or UF that we shouldn’t be large favorites. And we are likely favored over UF. Just not bigly. Does that mean we will win the NC? Heck no. But barring a rash of injuries…we should be in the discussion.
Clemson didn’t fair so well I’m their bowl and Oklahoma ended 6-7. It’s looking up for fsu but I’d be cautious on the optimism. Getting a Notre dame pass to face the really good teams could be humbling.
No disrespect, but I’d risk being humiliated in exchange for being included in the party. I’ll be thrilled if Clemson sucks next year.
I’d rather win a good bowl game than get boatraced. Keep the optimism of a rising program. We got embarrassed in a couple sec championship games and I don’t think it helped. I thought TCU was going to get embarrassed but you never know I guess.
Georgia may make some realty set in when trying to score 35-40 that it would take to compete and their qb is average. If Bennet was your qb and you guys were in the sec, you’d be in trouble and a dogfight every week. Bama and Georgia are just way to deep for either of our teams to have any consistent success right now. Everybody has a hot and is why we play the games but they are on a whole different level right now. How do you think Oklahoma would have faired against the top sec teams?
Arkansas edge Jordan Domineck has entered the transfer portal, @247SportsPortal has learned. He posted 34 tackles, 9.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks this season after transferring in from Georgia Tech. Hoping we offer and get him In immediately. Makes us much better immediately. 3rd in SEC in sacks. DO NOT let Norvell beat us for this guy like he did Verse.
That doesn’t matter though. We wouldn’t play Georgia or Bama until the playoffs at the earliest. And while I’ll give you Georgia (even though they just gave up 450 yards to Ohio State), it isn’t like Alabama hasn’t been lit up time and again this year. And FSU doesn’t need consistent success. They need to be successful against that level of defense on one particular evening next December/January. The reality for everyone now isn’t that defense wins championships. The reality is a top flight quarterback can light up the best teams. Period. It’s happened time and again. FSU has that next year. P.S. How Oklahoma might fare against Georgia right now means nothing. FSU has everyone of consequence back on offense. They’ve upgraded on defense. Schedule is easier. Hence my optimism. But…time will tell. We might fall flat on our face. But I doubt it.
Part about not having to play a playoff team until the playoffs is absolutely true. So yes you get a one game shot. We don’t have that in the SEC. I tend to think TCU did not get lucky and that they are actually a pretty decent team but Georgia might change their mind next week. Making a good showing of yourself definitely would help recruiting and make players want to come there. Getting beat by three or four touchdowns does not help. We have to beat Georgia Tennessee LSU and Alabama every single year to get to the playoffs so we don’t get there on a fluke
It’s some thing we do every other week. More than likely LSU will not even be in our conference championship but they are good
How often you play them isn’t relevant to the discussion. You suggested FSU wouldn’t face anyone who is of playoff strength until we got to the playoffs. I disagree and submit LSU is plenty good enough.
And they beat Alabama, right? Come on man…if you’re going to limit this discussion like that, then with that logic, nobody deserves to be in the playoffs unless they played Georgia during the regular season. Ohio State proves that hypothesis to be false. Who did they play who was of “playoff strength” prior to getting in and was a missed field goal away from sending the Bulldogs packing?
