I absolutely do not believe that.he might have been a guy they wanted BUT Mertz was not first on the list. They liked 2-3 others and for several reasons those didn’t happen.
I think the list actually was accidentally turned upside down, putting Mertz at the top and no one noticed the issue.
“All the blinking lights are gone,” Saban said. “You know what I mean by blinking lights? You know when you look at a Christmas tree and one light’s blinking and that’s all you look a is the blinking light? You don’t see the beauty of all the rest of it. “Well, when you have guys on your team sometimes that I call ‘energy vampires,’ you use all your energy on these guys trying to get them to do what they’re supposed to do. Those are the kind of guys that don’t end up playing in bowl games and don’t end up doing the best thing and make the best choices and decisions for the team and all that because they’ve got other motives, which I’m not being critical of. But this team has really worked hard and done really, really well, and a lot of players on our team have made a significant improvement.” TideIllustrated - Saban: Transferring Alabama players declined chance to play in Sugar Bowl
Tarquin to USC. White likely headed to a title contender also or at least that’s what I believe will happen. @bobbybaker86 and @candymanfromgc , I’m sure you guys may already know about Tarquin.
Kinda telling that Mertz committed not long after Pratt announced he was returning to Tulane next year.
Yep, McCall and Hartman high on the list also. Honestly thought Card and Spencer Sanders were numbers 4-5 on the list. Card’s ceiling is pretty high and although he did not put up monster numbers, Sanders has played in and won lots of big games.
The humorous thing about Evers is he would now be in a much better position to compete for a starting job if he had joined UF and not been afraid to compete for a spot or a second QB in a class. You will always compete for QB starting role with other HS recruits that are there before or after you and portal QBs. Perhaps if he did not listen to his helicopter Mama who I think became a cancer within the parent group of UF committed recruits. The same is true of the WR that decommitted and went to OU with Evers. He likely could have started next year after year in system with our WR depth. Young kids will make foolish decisions
