I absolutely do not believe that.he might have been a guy they wanted BUT
Mertz was not first on the list. They liked 2-3 others and for several reasons those didn’t happen.

 

I think the list actually was accidentally turned upside down, putting Mertz at the top and no one noticed the issue.

Honestly thought Card and Spencer Sanders were numbers 4-5 on the list.
Card’s ceiling is pretty high and although he did not put up monster numbers, Sanders has played in and won lots of big games.
